Stylishly contemporary yet warm and welcoming, the new lobby lounge at the InterContinental, I VI V (One Six Five), is a sophisticated sanctum from the encircling city commotion. Bordered with cascades and lush foliage and bejewelled with adjustable dimmer lighting, the contrast between nature and modernity complement rather than compete. Similarly, glass-topped tables with modern lustrous legs provide a sleek design, while soft single sofas and shared lounges in warm earth tones add a feel of cosiness and comfort. Caressed by the tunes of a live pianist, One Six Five is an elegant setting for afternoon tea.
Two alternatives are available. A Malaysian affair can be had with the ‘Selera’ Afternoon Tea, while traditions can be upheld with an order of the Royal Afternoon Tea. Apart from offering three layers, compulsory scones and, a sweet and a savoury section, you will find not too much in line with tradition. One thing for sure, you definitely will not be subjected to tired cucumber sandwiches on these exquisite platters.
The ‘Selera’ set held a slight twist on an old classic, which became our favourite of the sweeter items, Sesame Scones. Providing a moderately crunchy top the saltiness of the seeds contrasted well with the fruit preserves and clotted cream. Pastries included a Durian Éclair, Red Bean and Chocolate Opera, Mango Panna Cotta with Coconut Sago, Egg Tart with Pineapple Carpaccio and a ‘Kuih Lapis’ Lamington! An inventive motley crew of nibbles, I steered clear of the durian dessert, was intrigued by the Malaysian take on a Lamington and devoured the options featuring mango and coconut. A mini Beef Rendang Burger, Chicken Satay Pao, Tuna and Avocado ‘Kuih Paiti’, Lamb Samosa with Mango Chutney and, Butter Prawn Saffron Roll provided a savoury balance for the sweet.
The Royal Afternoon Tea too had attractive spins on the classics. Raisin and Plain Scones with Devonshire clotted cream and fresh preserves may have been the only things a British queen of tradition might recognize. Green Tea Crème Brulee and Hazelnut and Tonka Bean Macarons added just enough divergence to the original recipes to make them intriguing yet familiar, while the Lemon Meringue Tart, Caramel Eclair, and Chocolate and Pistachio Opera pushed our sugarmometres to the max. Crab Remoulade Roll, Smoked Salmon and Caviar Crostini, Lobster and Asparagus Bagel, Peking Duck with Cucumber Hoisin and, Wagyu Beef Tartare with Wasabi and Brioche warmed us up for dinner with their bite-size resemblance to snippets of main meals.
A vast drink selection is available to accompany your nibbling. Black, green, white, oolong and herbal teas come in a pot, or, a glass from their Tea on Ice section makes a refreshing cooler. Chocolate fans should not miss One Six Five’s rich indulgent hot chocolate. Also available with an extra kick of your favourite liqueur, dark milk or white chocolate cubes moulded around a spoon are melted directly into freshly steamed milk. A range of espresso-based coffee drinks and authentic Malaysian offerings including Teh Tarik and Kopi Johor can too be found on the menu.
Afternoon tea is available daily from 2 – 5 pm in the lobby lounge, One Six Five, at the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur. The set includes a three-tiered tray of scones, pastries and savouries and, a pot of house tea at RM75++. The friendly staff seem to be flexible with their offerings though, so if you’re not a tea drinker you can ask for a cup of coffee instead.
