Ke Qian Ang – Cookay Corner

In this interview with Ke Qian Ang, founder of Cookay Corner, we learn how her time in the UK influenced her current passion project. Also, do call her Kay – derived from her given name Ke!

What do you do and how did you get into the industry?

I was a full-time pharmacist in the UK but had a passion for baking. It started off as therapeutic sessions after work or on the weekends. I’m a foodie myself! Travelling around trying out new cafes and restaurants made me want to share my experiences through my cookies. Hence, Cookay Corner was born!  I returned to Malaysia half a year ago for good after spending more than a third of my life in the UK. I’m loving it so far!

What’s a food memory from your childhood that stands out?

Oh, that must be my favourite banana split! I was only allowed to have it after my mandatory gruesome exercise with mum when I was young. She’d get my siblings and me to the club and award us with this bowl of goodness afterwards – yums! Now it makes me wanna make banana split flavoured cookies.

What’s the best/worst part of your job?

I enjoyed baking cookies so much cause I get to try out crazy flavour combinations and then turn them into reality.

What’s your favourite food and beverage pairing?

Long black and cookies. That’s the best combination!! If you haven’t tried it yet, you must!

What’s one of the craziest things you’ve seen behind the scenes?

You might think baking cookies is a peaceful, calm and enjoyable therapeutic session. But, when it comes to cookie tasting, it can be the craziest thing – the variations. The number of cookies I have tasted to get to the current perfected recipe is pretty crazy.

The perfect day off would be…

Visiting different cafes or restaurants trying out new food, spending time with my loved ones and of course, receiving compliments from my lovely customers. I love you guys, biu biu!

A day in the life of Ke Qian Ang is…

Chaotic as I am the only baker for Cookay Corner, and at the same time have to deal with orders and enquiries, sorting out deliveries and pickups, etc.

What do you do for fun?

Cafe or restaurant hopping, hiking & travelling! I used to hike 20km a day back in the UK – good memories!

What’s something you’d like guests to know about Cookay Corner?

As a huge dessert lover and a world traveller, I am inspired to fuse different tastes, particularly Western and Asian flavours into my cookies. Stay tuned, and you will be surprised!

What’s something you’d like people to know about being a home baker as a profession?

It takes a lot of hard work and grit to get to where you want. Never underestimate yourself.

What’s your view on the food/drink scene in KL?

I personally think the food/drink scene in KL has grown tremendously. I see KL has a melting pot for all different cultures and cuisines and looking forward to seeing it grow more.

What’s in store for you in the upcoming months?

More new cookies!!! And crazy flavour cookies!! And certainly more collaborations and partnerships.
