La Mexicana – Authentic Mexican Cuisine, Ampang
Margarita Mexican Style
There’s a new kid in town, and it’s going to be grand. For nine years I’ve heard expat friends whine and moan over a heartfelt longing for authentic Mexican cuisine. Finally, those groans can be replaced with cheerful shouts of joy as they soon discover genuine Mexican goodness at La Mexicana at Terrace behind Hock Choon.
Stopping in for a preview before the official opening, we sampled exquisite dishes from the kitchen that had our hearts, minds and taste buds believing they were back in the Americas. A few dishes that must be on your order are: Ceviche Acapulco Style (fish marinated in lime juice); Sopa de Mariscos (a delicious rich broth of seafood); Enchiladas Verdes (shredded chicken filled tortillas smothered with cheese and a green chili sauce) and; Crepas de Cajeta (crepes with sweet boiled browned milk). Corona beer with a wedge of lime or a Mexican style Margarita made with a generous shot of tequila are ideal refreshments.

According to Chef Carmela (a Mexican restauranteer for over 25 years), La Mexicana aims to bring both authentic Mexican cuisine and genuine Mexican hospitality to the restaurant scene in KL. As Carmela says … “for Mexicans, sitting at the table is a time to enjoy the company of friends and family, savour the many flavours of 10,000 years of culinary tradition, and simply forget your cares… enjoy, buen provecho y hasta pronto!”
Reason to visit: authentic Mexican cuisine, ceviche, sopa de mariscos, enchiladas verdes, crepas de cajeta, Mexican style Margaritas
The soup was awesome! Opening day is today. I was in for a preview so I'm not sure about the prices. I did hear though that they were trying to keep it affordable so that people could make it a weekly favourite.
I haven't been to Fresca. Honestly though, the chicken in nut sauce was not my favourite of the evening. Everything else on the menu though was spectacular.
The website is in progress I hear. I don't know of a list but I know of a few restaurants. This is the only one I know of though that has TWO real Mexican chefs!
If Las Carretas is your favorite, you will find the food at La Mexicana very different. This is authentic food from all over Mexico. Definitely worth a drop in. 🙂
Speaking for many many expats that have craved real mexican food for a long time and visited la Mexicana as soon as it opened: We have all loved their food and Margaritas, delicious flavors! but there certainly is a general complaint that will keep costumers (like me) from going back. The portions are way too small for the price. I am afraid they are losing a lot of clients because of this. Maybe they would want to know.
I agreed on that!! and my friend and went there last week, bring their own wine and they asked how much will be the service charge for bringing their own wine and my friend was shocked because they said its 55RM.. I think the owner should at least be a good listeners to all customer's advices, suggestion and complaints, if they will continue this they are losing a lot of clients.
The food is great. There's been a hype about this place so we were looking forwards to eating there. We went there and I was dissapointed by the decoration. For a restaurant that charges this much they should have taken better care of the deco. Also, the famous Chef Carmela, which seems to be the main asset of the restaurant was rude to us. We were not very impressed by the way she talked to us and she treated the children. She seemed to be annoyed by everything the children did and even asked us to control them, although there were only sitting down.
Corkage was too high for place like this, considering that more upmarket restaurantes charge less. They portions are too small for mexican food. The rice was really not enough for the dish I ordered.
Ooo…I love Mexican! None here…and so far, I only had it at Chili's…and Taco Bill.
Oh dear, if Chili's and Taco Bell are the only spots you've had "Mexican" you have a WHOLE world of wonderful goodies awaiting your taste buds!
AWESOME!!! Thanks for the insider scoop Monica!
Knew you'd love this spot!!!
The chicken in chile and nut sauce looks like nasi kandar, but make me drool 😉
I suppose there are some similarities with local food. Definitely the use of chili is a common thread, but the flavors are distinctly different.
Wow that seafood soup is the most loaded soup ever! As a soup should be 🙂 What are the prices like?

And what a grand combo too – Corona and garlic prawns – a match made in Mexico 😉
Never have proper Mexican meal before but the food lookslike have strong flavor, are them?
I think Malaysians will love the full flavours and spice of real Mexican.
I've yet to try Mexican dishes! But it certainly look mouth watering!
Charmaine you'll have to make a stop at La Mexicana and educate your taste buds. 😉
Chicken in chilli and nut sauce looks much more appetizing than the chicken in chocolate sauce at Fresca! How would you compare this and Fresca btw?
I haven't been to Fresca. Honestly though, the chicken in nut sauce was not my favourite of the evening. Everything else on the menu though was spectacular.
Yum, I’d love to eat that!
Hope you get to try it soon. 🙂

Also, I would love to try all the the Mexican restaurants in KL. Is there a list of Mexican restaurants in KL?
Thanks for your blog!

I've passed on this feedback. I've heard similar things too.

I hope they can improve.
I am sending my friend, a true Mexicana, to eat here this weekend. I wish it were me.
Hope she enjoys it! Also hope she can connect with the chefs – two Mexicans. 🙂
