Afternoon Tea at the Tea Salon, Starhill Gallery, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

With over 60 varieties of tea and a comfortable, soothing atmosphere, the Starhill Tea Salon is a lovely place to pause in the middle of your busy day, and just relax. The armchairs and couches invite you to stay awhile, and the tea canisters, stacked in columns around the seating area, offer an innovative and colourful delight to the eye. At teatime, there’s a pianist at the grand piano playing light music selections, which adds to the ambiance.

There are two options for Afternoon Tea, the English and Oriental Sets. The English set is relatively traditional and includes petite Open-faced Sandwiches, Fruit Scones with Whipped Cream and Blackberry Jam and a selection of French Pastries, which change daily. I especially enjoyed the Lemon Macaron and the Chocolate Cake with a rich chocolate ganache topping. The Oriental Set provides a selection of nice fresh Sushi and Maki along with Fried and Steamed Dim Sum.  

The choice of teas is a little overwhelming at first, but whatever you choose, you can be sure it’s the best each region of the world has to offer. There are selections for morning, afternoon and evening, plus scented, flower and fruit infused teas. All teas are brewed for a set amount of time then decanted into a Bredemeijer insulated teapot.  We began with a mild black tea from Sri Lanka, followed a South African Rooibos with Crème Caramel flavour, which was velvety and satisfying. Finally we tasted the Signature Tea, green tea blended with mango and citrus, a fruity, refreshing finale to a delightful afternoon. 

Afternoon Tea is offered from 3pm to 5pm from Monday to Saturday and is priced at RM70++ for two people. For an extra treat, an all-you-can-eat Chocolate Buffet is offered on Sundays from 2:30pm to 5:30pm at a reasonable RM50++ per person.

Reason to visit:  To escape the hustle and bustle of Bukit Bintang, and indulge in an exceptional cup of tea.
