*** Please note: At the time of writing the Thai government were in the process of announcing that all permanent structures located on public beaches would shortly be removed. The parts of this club on the other side of the road still remain, however the sections in the sand are no longer there. Please see the end of this article for updated photos of the newly renovated beach club.

Catch Beach Club, Buffet Beachside Dinner – Pre and Post Surin Beach Clean Up

Catch Beach Club claims to be Phuket’s most inventive, style-setting beach club. Well it certainly looks glitzy and glamorous with a white and silver theme. Day or night, hotel guests and walk-ins alike can enjoy an impressive range of fresh food and drinks while relaxing with some light DJ rhythms and helpful service that’s never far from your eye. It looks like the late night groove will be pretty impressive with twinkling disco balls and we’re promised that late evening entertainment involves fire dancers or acrobats.

We’re here for the BBQ dinner Buffet, which looks fresh and inviting. Where to start will be your only problem here. I begin with a simply delicious selection of colourful salads. I can’t get the seafood salad on the spoon without two pieces of seafood, it’s so densely packed with options. I pile on more at the awesome fresh seafood bar. Fresh crab so sweet and juicy it will make your mouth melt, fat mussels, plump prawns and more vie for attention here. My final combo is jaw busting, so many flavours but I promise you none overwhelms. Beetroot surprises with a sneaky peanut tinge, mushroom pasta is oozingly pestoey, the seafood mix has a zing of fresh spice, Som Tum is delicious and a simple Caprese just finishes me off. Try not to fill up at salad though as there is more yet to discover. Before embarking on main choices, I have to try a little fresh sashimi, and the tuna is clean, fresh and cold.

Choices abound in the main selection, and like me, you may end up with more than one plate. If you want to go with Thai there are some reasonable options, a flavourful beef green curry, a peanutty pork satay. Mon and I trip over each other for buttery crunchy roast veggies that complement rotisserie chicken, so juicy and tender, evoking evokes flavourful memories of Turkish and Sudanese street food. Fresh BBQ option just has to be a ‘surf and turf’ a slender slice of sirloin with a small lobster tail, complete with béarnaise on the side, simple but tasty fare. Juicy pork sausages, whole calamari and giant tiger prawns are also on offer to sizzle on the grill.

What’s on the Barbie?
All about us people are enjoying the music, the food and the drinks. Catch has a pleasant glow about it, very fresh and funky without being in your face. Let’s call it grown up fun! Lighted lanterns fly up in the darkening sky adding even more charm to the evening. Despite our early evening cocktails at Bongo Rum Bar, the evening would not be complete without a glass of wine with dinner. We try a Friuli Grave Pinot Grigio (THB320) that’s medium dry with a lemon drop finish a refreshing twinkle of acidity in the floral notes and a good wine for seafood. The Rioja Tempranillo (THB320) is dry and flinty with a hint of vanilla, sweet spice and slight pepper. It goes well with the steak and the spicier dishes.

Dessert options now catch our eye. Mini boats of crème brulee are decent for a buffet, light crème and slightly crisp sweet brulee. There’s not bad for a buffet light crisp slightly sweet. There’s miniature mango sticky rice if you want to try a traditional Thai dessert and a moussey chocolate cake with walnuts. So often chocolate fountains disappoint in reality, as the chocolate is so thin it can’t coat the fruit. This one is splendidly thick and oozes with body and taste. My juicy red strawberries are well coated with a good quality chocolate that complements the last of my red wine. Yum. Yum! Meanwhile Monica muses over a macaroon, reflecting that the texture is very good for the climate… A further sinful temptation awaits us in the form of self serve ice cream. Monica tries slithers of mango and coconut, ‘just a touch’ and pronounces them great texture, smooth and very fruity. I take cookies and cream with chocolate and then add ‘chocolate sauce’ from that chocolate fountain… Well that’s why she’s a supermodel and I’m not! But yummy scrummy, this feeds the inner child! Creamy ice cream that holds its consistency and luscious, luscious spoonfuls of choccie sauce! Superb spooning! Couldn’t be happier as we head back to our spacious accommodation. A great ending to a great day!

  1. Well, it still looks beautiful after the renovation. Shame all those deck chairs had to be removed though!

  2. The beach now looks bigger after the clean up! 😉

  3. Lovely place but of course, for me, the main attraction would be the food. So colourful! Beautiful!!!
