Heavenly Spa by Westin, The Westin Langkawi

If you’re looking for a romantic itinerary to woo your loved one, Heavenly Spa by Westin has it all sorted out.
Giant casuarinas line the shore of a beautiful bay filled by the Andaman Sea, not only providing seductive shade with their slender weeping needles but also an aromatic scent. Take a stroll with your partner along the beach path in the late afternoon to the purpose built Heavenly Spa by Westin.
A mist of rosewater is sprayed on faces to signify the beginning of the experience. Warm tea and cool scented moist towels refresh, as staff note our preferences and any health concerns. Capturing the power of positive thinking guests are asked to choose a word to think about during the treatment: love; gratitude; or hope. Instead of the usual flower bowl placed under the bed, a stone with the chosen word is visible urging guests to focus on the mantra.
Ten treatment rooms (5 single and 5 couple) have inclusive bathrooms, the couple’s room with a bathtub big enough for two. Running water is heard from inside, and upon opening the curtains a water feature and pond are revealed. Balinese spa music chimes in the background, but spa therapists assert comfort levels adjusting temperature and volume of music as desired.

Leave Your Worries in the Basket Outside the Door
A Signature Massage of 80 minutes, which starts with a foot ritual, is the beginning of the romantic evening. A bath with slices of orange infusing the warm water, followed with a salt scrub slowly cleanses the skin and soul of the outside world and prepares minds and bodies for the treatment.

Once prone, a Thai herbal compress is pressed on the back for 20 – 25 minutes encouraging muscles to fully relax before the body massage begins. Aromatherapy oils assist hands to glide over the skin. Thumbs, palms and heels of hands are used to press deeply and release tension from the body. Therapists are well trained and technique is not only purposeful, but individualized. Masseuses detect knots and work them through. They take note of reactions and check in with guests. The massage is a completely soothing experience.
Continuing with a truly romantic theme is the Spa by Night experience scheduled after a treatment. Set up on the deck facing the sandy shores and glimmering water further out, the scene is boosted with the addition of flickering candle lanterns, a fresh vase of flowers and our own personal butler.

Spa by Night – Dining Table for Two
A favourite of ours, Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc from Marlbourough New Zealand satiates our thirst and desire for a day’s end beverage. Passionfruit and mango aromas, are followed by a good mouthful of flavour and a clean crisp finish. It’s well suited to our seafood menu that’s ahead of us.

Lemon Dill Cured Sea Bass with curry vinaigrette forms the crown of a tower based with green and yellow zucchini rounds. A big sprig of rosemary leans across the tower and its leaves add a lovely herby infusion to the dressing. Harissa marinated calamari rings, and cucumber and onion salad, share the same plate atop a pile of mixed salad leaves. This marinade has a kick and leaves our tongues tingling with spice.

A combination of Grilled Garlic Prawns, Sea Bass and Curried Scallops are served with baked potato (cooked in its skin in aluminium foil and with a spoon of sour cream on the open top), charbroiled root vegetables and finished with a ginger buerre blanc. The white wine and butter sauce on the side has a fresh sour tang to it. Hubby clearly loves the sauce as once he’s tasted it he pours the entire bowl onto the plate scraping the edges not to miss a drop. The seafood is tasty enough on its own, charred with the marks and flavours of the grill, but the dipping is so good that I too slather is on my fish and soak it up with the bread rolls. Everything in this dish is so fresh and fabulous, we both don’t speak until there’s not a flake left.

Our eyes pop when we see dessert. Two huge bowls of Crème Brûlée are served to each of us. One flavoured with Green Tea and the other with Passionfruit. Both are topped with a fine layer of brittle caramelized sugar protecting velvety smooth bases. Both are gently infused with their assigned flavouring, furnishing subtle deviations from the classic vanilla recipe. Even custard loving hubby is finding it a challenge to finish the two.

Apart from the supersized dessert, portions have been perfect, filling but not stuffing us uncomfortably over a number of hours. Service has been graceful and the environment intimate and romantic. If someone proposed after this experience, I think I’d say, “Yes!”
Reasons to visit: quality spa treatment; romantic setting; grilled seafood main; personal butler.
