On my list of “to-visit” before restaurants closed recently was Evoke Gastrobar. Promising to evoke my “taste buds with Italian, French and Spanish” cuisine and drinks, and nestled in the quiet neighbourhood of Taman Tunku, it seemed a sure win. Sadly, my first experience is with their delivery menu, not on-site as I’d hoped. 

However, it turns out not to be so regrettable at all! If the Evoke Gastrobar’s delivery menu is anything to go by, the dine-in experience is bound to be exceptional. 

Food and beverage veterans Ryan and Celina have collected recipes representing their love of European cuisine and international travels. The menu is just the right size, in my opinion, offering sufficient choice without being overwhelming. I am appreciative of several meat-free items included, but there is plenty for animal protein lovers too.

Starters

We kick off with a dish bound to become a star, Fried Polenta (RM 25). Four cubes of maize flour are firm enough to hold their form but soft enough to melt in the mouth without chewing. They’re covered with a luscious blue cheese sauce crammed with an assortment of sauteed mushrooms – a must order.

Quick respite from the richness of the polenta is found in the straightforward Heirloom Tomatoes (RM 28). A variety of halved tomatoes is simply topped with shavings of Grano Padano cheese and balsamic vinegar. It’s the perfect intermission before another flavour-packed dish.

Vibrant orange, the Roasted Spiced Cauliflower (RM 28) is coated in a spice mix, obviously including turmeric, hence the eye-catching hue. The warm veg is complemented by a cool hung yoghurt dressing with fresh herbs and rum-soaked raisins, offering bursts of sweetness.

Roasted Spiced Cauliflower

Another excellent choice for starters is the Mushroom Arancini (RM 35). These balls sport a crunchy coat and a warm dense middle, given even more oomph with truffle oil. Though, what really stands out is the cashew Romesco sauce that they sit in – a superb complement to the spheres.

Evoke Gastrobar Delivery Menu – Mains

There is a handful of mains on the takeaway menu ranging from Lamb Meatball Pasta (RM 38) and Roasted Half Spring Chicken (RM 48) up to Wagyu Flank Steak (RM 140). We opt for a couple of dishes in the middle with Poached Smoked Kingfish (RM 89) and Beef Bourguignon (RM 98). 

The fish is a generous portion with a thick white fillet enhanced by a lemon cream sauce. Mixed sauteed mushrooms and pea sprouts make a delicious tangle, and fresh shaved fennel lightens the overall profile.

Poached Smoked Kingfish

The most decadent of our mains at Evoke Gastrobar today is the beef. It’s a heavy chunk of beef cheek that flakes at the touch of a fork. Thanks to lengthy braising, it has absorbed the flavours of the broth and strings apart in soft, gelatinous, melt-in-the-mouth strands. Potatoes mashed with liberal amounts of butter and asparagus trim the warm, comforting recipe.

Drinks Menu

The team at Evoke Gastrobar are awaiting their liquor license and hope to offer a full menu soon. For now, they have a handful of coffee, spritzes, smoothies, juices, mocktails and bottled beer. My Iced Latte (RM 15) is welcoming and robust, the Berry Smoothie (RM 15) fresh and sweet, and Heineken (RM 20) and Edelweis (RM 15) beer icy cold.

Evoke Gastrobar Delivery Menu

Trying Evoke Gastrobar’s Delivery Menu has not served to strike it off my “to-visit” list. It has only resulted in making me want to visit even more so in person. I hope to enjoy the quality food plated professionally, accompanied by premium wine and service in the cosy setting of Taman Tunku very soon. 

Reasons to order the Evoke Gastrobar Delivery Menu: comforting European flavours and well-balanced meals; must try the polenta and mushroom arancini; evoke an even stronger desire to visit in person.

  2. That Beef Bourguignon looks nothing like the French Beef Bourguignon! It is one dish that my husband has mastered perfectly and even the French say it is the best!

    I can’t wait until our restaurants open soon. Although I will have to travel further afield to experience such culinary delights. But we do have a short holiday booked in a few weeks time…
