Monica Tindall

Brought to you by the team behind Curious Bakers, The Daily Fix, Sharing Plates and Sin See Tai, Kin by The Daily Fix is the latest spot to grace Malacca’s hip café scene. A couple of kilometres outside of the Jonker Street tourist strip in Taman Kota Laksamana, it’s frequented by locals and visitors in the know.

There’s plenty of parking in the surrounding streets, a refreshing change to many of the popular spots in this historical town. Warm ochre brightens the walls, harmonized with polished cement and finished off with some dried botanicals wall features. The air-conditioned interior has sufficient natural light thanks to a sunroof and glass wall entrance. There’s also an alfresco patio, which is not too hot as it’s shaded.

Kin by The Daily Fix Menu

Sandwiches

Kin by The Daily Fix serve a variety of sandwiches all made on loaves from their sister kitchen, Curious Bakers. We do find it hard to find a good bagel so we’re keen to give the Asian Honey Soy Chicken Bagel (RM 18) a try. The ring is nicely chewy, a result of being boiled and then baked. The honey soy chicken filling with caramelized onions, cucumber and house-made soy mayo is a fitting Asian boost to the bagel. This is delicious toasted and provides a good chew and texture – highly satisfying.

Brunch

While Homebaked Granola (RM 19) might sound a simple choice when exploring a menu, I remember the team’s delicious mix from sibling café Sin See Tai. It’s a crunchy combo of rolled oats, almonds, pumpkin seeds and walnuts served with milk, yoghurt and fresh fruit – a healthy light meal anytime of day.

Rice

Carb cravings can also be satiated with some Asian rice recipes. The Signature Beef Fried Rice (RM 19) is value for money with its generous portion or short grain rice covered by a beautiful blanket of egg. Aussie beef brisket and crispy pieces of beef fat are the highlight here boosting the flavour of the addictively chewy rice. We wouldn’t be in Malaysia if the rice were not topped with egg, and in this case, instead of the popular sunny-side-up choice, the rice is boosted with a scramble coat and house-made gravy. This was hubby’s favourite.

Ravioli

Kin by The Daily Fix offers a handful of Homemade Fusion Ravioli with various fillings, including western and Asian flavours. Co-owner Julian says they lay no claim that any of their dishes are authentic or true to tradition. Instead, the team like to “have fun with the food,” mixing their favourite ingredients into popular recipes. Avoiding spice for heat-aversive hubby, we try the Truffle Mushroom (RM 23). The parcels are plump with a mix of butter and oyster mushrooms seasoned with a creamy truffle sauce, white miso and sweet basil. Hazelnuts contribute a nice nutty flavour and pleasant crunch.

Salads

It’s always good to get your greens, and both the Mediterranean and House Salad (RM 16) fill our requirements. We try the latter and enjoy the mix of watermelon, coral lettuce, cucumber, maple cream cheese, cherry tomatoes, walnuts, mint leaves and sweet basil leaves.

Kin by The Daily Fix Drinks Menu

Another thing this group is known for is coffee. They roast their own beans, curating blends for espresso-based drinks and cold brew. The house blend features Brazilian and Colombian beans in a light to medium roast giving a balanced, nutty finish. We sip on a Flat White (RM 11) with a nicely textured foam and also enjoy a quality Uji Matcha (RM 12). As you might see the pattern by now, the team at Kin by The Daily Fix also have their own House-brew Kombucha (RM 13), which comes on a tea or coffee base. I’m a bit of a kombucha connoisseur and appreciate the faint fizz and good tangy bite to this brew.

Kin by The Daily Fix Review

Kin by The Daily Fix is a welcome addition to Malacca’s coffee scene. Located away from the main tourist drag, it’s refreshingly easy to find a park, (and a seat). The menu is just the right size and filled with tasty, wholesome international recipes with some Japanese influence. Drinks are high quality, as are all of their baked goods. The staff are kind and friendly. I recommend you visit on your next Malacca trip.
