The Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur’s iconic and award-winning Mandarin Grill, has launched “The Evolution”, an exciting new menu focused on some of the most premium selections of steaks and other meats. The Chef du Cuisine Marco Caverni has been in Malaysia for one year and has passionately developed this new menu bringing his international experience to the table at the Mandarin Grill. The menu’s evolution is intended to elevate the already exceptional reputation and standards, always striving to be the best modern grill in Kuala Lumpur.

Monica and I have been trying to coordinate our schedules for a while now, and finally, we find a date! I am thrilled that it’s at the Mandarin Grill. MO is one of my favourite places in Kuala Lumpur, and I have spent many glorious stay-cations here over the years. For some reason, I’ve never tried the Mandarin Grill, though. Monica and I are invited to a media walk-around tasting of “The Evolution”, which starts off in my favourite direction…with Champagne. We are offered a classic cocktail, the French 75, a high-end version using Broker’s London Dry Gin and St-Germain Elderflower Liqueur and Deutz. Happy days! Of course, I go with the Champagne Deutz Brut Classic on its own. The event is not a typical sit-down examination of each dish, it’s more of a fun mix and mingle, and my Deutz glass never goes empty. We get to chat with all of the Chefs and heads of the F&B Department while we keep grabbing for delectable bites of wagyu beef cheek, beef Wellington and tartare. I really love the tartare as they are preparing it in front of us and we can pick the special ingredients we want. Monica loves the unique and delicious vegan roasted tomato risotto with spiced cauliflower.

Of course, being a grill, most of the food is focused on beef, including various grain-fed wagyu, Angus, and 45-day dry-aged cuts. Fresh seafood and seasonal and local ingredients are also strongly present. Amongst the signature dishes on the new menu include the 45-day Aged Angus Florentine T-Bone Steak, Char-Grilled Octopus, Angus Beef Tartare with Transmontanus Caviar, Argentinian Beef Wellington, and Australian Lobster Thermidor with Fresh Truffle and Creamy Cognac sauce.
