Azzaro Daud @ Indera Fit – Personal Trainer KL

Azzaro Daud

In this interview, Azzaro Daud tells us about life as a mobile personal trainer servicing KLCC, Ampang and Ukay Heights areas with Indera Fit.

What do you do?

I am a fitness instructor and rehab therapist at Indera Fit. I listen to and help my clients set and attain their fitness goals, helping change mindsets and habits and ultimately making small changes to their lifestyle to become the best versions of themselves. I also work with people with injuries to rehabilitate and make their movements more functional.

How did you get into the industry?

Many years ago, I worked as a researcher at a local university. In my spare time, I started working out. Although I had always been interested in fitness, my knowledge of the subject was rather limited. I used to train a few times a week, but I saw little progress, which was quite frustrating. However, that very frustration sparked a deep passion within me. I became determined to study and understand how to make advancements in the fitness industry and my personal fitness.

Taking a significant leap, I decided to change careers. I devoted my energy to becoming more qualified and experienced to help people on their fitness journeys. Now, after two decades in the fitness industry and at the age of 50, I possess a unique insight into fitness at different stages of life, and the specific needs the body goes through.

You mentioned working with older clients – how does exercise change when you are older?

Both older men and women can improve their functionality and general health by integrating an exercise programme that balances mobility, flexibility, and strength training. The human body changes naturally as we get older. Males and females both go through different changes. For instance, testosterone production gradually declines and then stops in older men. Strength training, maybe supplemented, can help slow down this process.

On the other hand, older women frequently have decreased bone density. To strengthen and increase bone density, strength training is essential. My job is to help my older clients achieve this balance and lead healthier lives.

What are some of your beliefs about personal training?

My core belief as a personal trainer is centred around inspiring others to lead a healthy lifestyle and fostering a positive body image, regardless of shape, fitness level, or age. I have the privilege of working with a diverse range of clients, and my background as a counsellor enables me to truly listen to their individual needs. Sometimes, I even liken personal trainers to hairdressers of the fitness world, as our clients trust us with their highest aspirations and their lowest moments.

Throughout my career, I have worked with clients, from teenagers seeking to improve their fitness and build muscle to individuals who may have experienced injuries and require specialised attention. All of my clients share a common desire—to become the best versions of themselves, both physically and mentally: stronger, fitter, and more confident.

Azzaro Daud’s perfect day off ….

would be a balance. Achieving a sense of balance is, in my opinion, the key to the ideal day off. The first part would be spent relaxing. It could be as simple as watching an engrossing K-Drama, taking a walk/ sniff with my pet dog, or connecting with friends over a nice meal. I love to cook, and I also enjoy the pleasure of eating. So, a crucial component of my ideal day off would be to cook foods that inspire me while listening to the sounds of BlackPink.

However, a day wouldn’t be complete without engaging in some sort of physical activity. Exercise is energising for me. It may be as straightforward as taking a reviving stroll or walking in the middle of nature. Or, I can engage in a more strenuous weight training or aerobic workout to get that energy surge. Exercise helps me stay mentally and emotionally healthy and keep me physically fit.

I understand the value of rest, and since sleep is essential for the body’s natural healing and repair process, I have a soft spot in my heart for taking naps. Finding the ideal mix of activities and self-care rituals would make the day perfect.

What is the best and worst part of your job?

The best part of my job is working with clients to achieve their goals and witnessing the positive changes that come with their training. Whether it’s seeing their pants fit more comfortably or witnessing increased confidence and ability, it’s incredibly rewarding. However, the occasional last-minute cancellation can be challenging, especially as a mobile trainer. Nonetheless, I strive to be understanding and flexible, knowing that unexpected situations can arise. Overall, the joy of helping clients progress outweighs any minor setbacks.

What would you like people to know about being a personal trainer as a profession?

Personal trainers are skilled in exercises and strength training. Still, it is by no means the total extent of their knowledge. In reality, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. As a trainer, we can assist clients more holistically in managing stress, losing weight, decreasing their chance of developing chronic diseases, improving their sports performance, quitting smoking, and achieving other important health objectives. We are change-makers at such a personal level.
