WICKED – A Must-see in Sydney, Australia
Sydney has become the go-to destination for theatre enthusiasts, as the sensational Broadway hit WICKED delights audiences and critics alike, prompting an extension of its season until February 4, 2024. The exciting production, adorned with lavish sets and opulent costumes, has created a buzz in the Emerald City, making it a must-see for both locals and international visitors.
According to John Frost, co-producer of WICKED Australia, “This musical extravaganza is a visual and auditory feast, showcasing some of the most extravagant sets and costumes ever witnessed in Australia. Our WICKED cast has received universal acclaim for their exceptional performances.”
Supported by the NSW Government through Destination NSW, WICKED is recognized as a key attraction for drawing overseas visitors to Sydney. The musical, now in its extended season, continues to be a major drawcard, particularly for tourists from New Zealand and Southeast Asia.
Celebrating almost two decades since its Broadway premiere, WICKED has retained its status as one of the world’s most successful musicals, accumulating over 100 prestigious awards, including the Grammy Award, Olivier Award, Helpmann Awards, Tony Awards®, and Drama Desk Awards. Described by USA Today as “A Complete Triumph! An original musical that will make you laugh, cry, and think,” WICKED promises a spellbinding experience.
Long before Dorothy’s arrival in Oz, two young women with contrasting destinies cross paths. One, born with emerald-green skin, is misunderstood yet talented, while the other is a bubbly and ambitious blonde. As their story unfolds, they become rivals and, ultimately, friends, navigating a world quick to label one as “good” and the other as “wicked.”
Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, WICKED features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The production boasts musical staging by Wayne Cilento and original direction by Joe Mantello. In Australia, WICKED is produced by John Frost for Crossroads Live Australia, Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt, and David Stone.
The stellar Australian cast includes Courtney Monsma as Glinda, Sheridan Adams as Elphaba, Robyn Nevin as Madame Morrible, Todd McKenney as the Wizard, Liam Head as Fiyero, Adam Murphy as Dr Dillamond, Shewit Belay as Nessarose, Kurtis Papadinis as Boq, and Zoe Coppinger as the Elphaba Standby.
