Imagine a place where time becomes fluid, where the echo of colonial footsteps mingles with the vibrant hum of contemporary life. Picture yourself stepping into the lobby, bathed in the warm glow of Penang’s golden twilight, and entering a sanctuary where history and luxury intertwine. This is The George Penang by The Crest Collection, heritage reimagined, an ode to Penang’s soulful spirit, and a gateway to the vibrant streets of George Town.

In the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town, The George Penang reflects the city’s past. Its majestic white Georgian-era architecture facade mirrors tales of a bygone era when merchants traversed spice routes, and colonial influences were woven into the very fabric of Penang. Step inside, and the narrative shifts. Modern design sensibilities infused with local touches greet us. Sleek lines and airy spaces vibe with intricate tilework and personalised accents – look for the owner’s stamp collection subtly displayed throughout the hotel. The property exudes a luxurious boutique character with just under 100 rooms and proprietor-designed details.
Rooms & Suites
In the 92 rooms and suites of The George Penang, there’s something for most budgets and needs. From the 30 m2 Deluxe to the 61 m2 Heritage Suite, natural light streams through floor-to-ceiling windows. We appreciate the enormous balcony of the Heritage Suite with three different seating areas and views of Penang’s tallest tower, tiled roofscapes and glimpses of the sea. From here, we enjoy watching the going-ons of the streets below, particularly the junction where the town’s historical streets meet – Penang Road, Leith Street, Chulia Street and Argyll Road.
Laid out in dual levels, the entry comprises a generous living and dining area with a powder room, mini-bar, lounge and armchair, coffee and dining tables and large-screen Smart TV. Several drinks are complimentary in the mini-bar, and a basket of local sweets is a fun addition.
A staircase takes us to the loft, where the bedroom and ensuite are located. It’s a cosy space done well. The bathroom includes a modern oval bathtub, and the space looks quite stylish with the mosaic tiled floors. There’s also an intelligent toilet with a smart bidet, offering a warmed seat and customised cleaning.
Currently, guests are provided with two plastic bottles of water daily and mini, single-use shampoo, body wash and lotion. We’re hoping to see some luxury and eco upgrades here, such as refillable pumps and reusable glass bottles or a water station/filtered water to better suit the luxury boutique feel of the property.
Restaurants & Bars
Saffron Dining is a vibrant space where East meets West. Open daily from 7 am until 10:30 pm, it’s an all-day-dining kitchen. Breakfast is a buffet of local and Western recipes with live egg and noodle stations a highlight. One morning, I have laksa and nasi lemak, and the next, scrambled eggs and toast. It’s convenient if you don’t want to think too early in the morning. However, many tourists forego brekkie and hit the neighbouring streets. The George Penang’s location is superb for foodies, with an abundance of well-reputed options just steps away. If you’re in Penang for the food, you’ll be delighted with the hotel’s address. It is in the heart of food paradise.
Our restaurant and bar agenda is packed on this trip, so we don’t have a chance to stop for a refreshment at George Bar. However, we can’t help but appreciate the beautiful design and imagine settling into a tailor-made seat, imbibing in a glass of wine or classic cocktail late afternoon with a more relaxed schedule.
Facilities
On the second floor of The George Penang, there’s a small fitness room with three cardio machines, a rack of dumbbells and benches. While compact, the equipment is high quality, and I appreciate 24-hour access with your room key. Bring your own towel and water, as these are not yet provided. A sauna and steam room are a nice post-workout touch.
Also, on the second floor, a lovely saltwater pool is lined with recliners and daybeds. Shaded for most of the day and bordered with lush greenery, it’s a cool respite from the tropical heat.

Beyond the comfort of The George, Penang’s vibrant streets await. From the UNESCO-listed streetscapes adorned with street art to the bustling hawkers alive with fire, smoke, and delicious treasures – the city is a sensory playground waiting to be explored. Hop on a trishaw or stroll through the maze of alleyways, where hidden temples and charming cafes reside alongside historic landmarks. Explore the Clan jetties and spirited waterways. Indulge in Penang’s street food paradise, where aromatic satay sticks and steaming bowls of laksa tempt every corner. The George is a springboard to discovery, a launchpad to experience Penang’s pulsating heart and soul.
