Astria Clinic – Medical Aesthetic Treatments, Bangsar
Monica Tindall
It seems the clock is speeding up as I approach my 50th birthday. My brain says I can do things, but my body doesn’t comply. My clothes are the same size, but all my parts have moved. My skin routine is the same, but I’m getting pimples. Sagging skin, lines, dark circles, loss of elasticity – everything seems on the verge of a final droop, ready to slip entirely off my face. I need help, and I’m at Astria Clinic in Bangsar to see if Dr Jinly and her team can offer any redemption.
Astria Clinic Bangsar
Astria Clinic, under the leadership of Dr Jinly Wong, opened earlier this year. Many of you might know Dr Jinly from some of her earlier postings at Sloane and Beverly Wilshire. With Astria Clinic, she branches out under her own team, providing medical aesthetic treatments to an international crowd in Bangsar.
Dr Jinly gained her graduate degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and has over a decade of experience specialising in aesthetic medicine. Skin rejuvenation and anti-aging treatments are at the core of the practice, combining the latest in technology, science, and technique to customise pathways for individual goals and conditions.
I take a Grab to the clinic, avoiding Bangsar parking and traffic. Still, for those who drive, it’s recommended to take a lot in Bangsar Village III. It’s undercover, and there are usually spaces.
A short walk from the car park, I find Astria Clinic on the same strip as Alexis, VCR, and Fittie Sense. The cool greys and splash of green with potted plants in the clinic make it feel immediately calming.
Vivian greets me at reception and assists me in filling out a questionnaire highlighting any medications or conditions the doctor should be aware of. I’m then escorted to a VIP room with a cup of tea to wait for my appointment. When it’s my time, I move to the consultation room to discuss my needs with Dr Jinly.
At first, Dr Jinly listens to my woes before taking a good look at my skin. She then discusses treatment options, the reality of downtime, and my level of comfort with various routes. We decide on a combination of therapies (a combo is always recommended for optimal results), to tackle sagging skin and fine lines, my top two worries.
Astria Clinic Signature Facial (RM500)
The RF Rejuvenation Facial is a comprehensive treatment that addresses various skin concerns without requiring invasive procedures. It combines radiofrequency (RF) energy and sonophoresis to firm, lift, and rejuvenate the skin.
During the treatment, RF energy is applied to the face and eyes, stimulating collagen production and tightening the skin. This helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while sonophoresis enhances product absorption for maximum effectiveness. You’ll know this tip is being used when you hear a faint squeaking sound. The treatment concludes with a nourishing collagen mask, serum infusion, moisturiser to hydrate, and sunscreen to protect the skin.
It’s well-suited to my demographic because of aging, sagging, and loose skin, as it improves elasticity and assists in a more vibrant appearance. As with most modern technologies, it’s recommended to repeat on a monthly basis for sustained results. Vivian carries out this session. It’s so restful I nod off on several occasions.
Mandelic Acid Peel (RM400)
As mentioned earlier, pimples are a new and unwelcome development in the evolution of my skin. Dr Jinly recommends a mandelic acid peel to exfoliate the skin’s surface. She says the treatment can enhance texture and diminish fine lines and wrinkles. It can also address hyperpigmentation and acne.
The session is express, taking only three minutes! The peel is applied, left for a short time, and then neutralised. Gosh, this is so fast. You could do it during your lunch break and still have time to eat.
A few days later, I notice a smoother complexion, and while the literature says breakouts may decrease within one to two weeks, the tiny whiteheads and red dots I had have already disappeared.
Pico Laser Treatment (RM1200)
For overall rejuvenation, tightening, an evening of skin tone, and reduction of fine lines, Dr Jinly suggests Discovery PICO. The treatment utilises picosecond laser technology, which delivers ultra-short pulses of laser energy just below the skin’s surface. The picosecond pulses are so brief (one trillionth of a second) that they shatter the pigment particles without causing significant damage to the surrounding skin. This precision allows for effective treatment with minimal side effects.
The treatment begins with a skin cleansing and application of numbing cream that takes about 15 minutes to work. When it’s time to begin, my eyes are covered, and Dr Jinly walks me through the process step by step. She starts gently, preparing me for each change. Even though I’ve done several different types of laser treatments before, I’m still a little cautious, so I appreciate the care taken in going slowly and explaining as we go.
The laser handpiece is passed across the skin in a series of repetitive movements. I feel a light prickling sensation, but it’s not really uncomfortable. Dr Jinly changes the settings several times to target different goals—skin tone, fine lines, and static wrinkles. The Discovery PICO laser can be adjusted for specific goals and available downtime. Towards the end, my skin feels hot, as if I have a sunburn, but it’s never unbearable. All in all, it takes less than 20 minutes to cover my entire face.
A cooling gel mask is applied afterwards, immediately reducing the redness. The cold mask feels wonderful on my warm skin.
My face is red like a sunburn when I leave, yet not bad enough to stop me from eating in public straight after the session. The following day, all the redness has dissipated apart from a few broken capillaries around my eyes. By day three, there are no obvious signs of the intervention, but I can already see improvements in my complexion – smoother, more even.
Of course, it’s advised to avoid direct sun exposure and harsh skincare products for a short period, but these are good pieces of advice in general. Dr Jinly says monthly treatments are ideal to maintain results.
This treatment offers a scientifically advanced, efficient, and relatively comfortable option for addressing various skin concerns with minimal recovery time. I’ll definitely be looking into having more regular sessions. And I’m confident I’ll return to Astria Clinic before my clock ticks past half a century for further redemption.
