Xeomin – Fine Line & Wrinkle Treatment at Astria Clinic KL
Monica Tindall
I spend most of my day with young children, so my face is in constant motion – I’m laughing, frowning, raising my eyebrows, giving disapproving looks and smiling an awful lot. The wrinkles on my face have been well-earned. I am grateful for the privilege of ageing and the many wonderful opportunities to form those lines. Yet, at the same time, I’m also thankful for the advancements in technology that allow me to hang onto my youth for just a little longer.
Dr Jinly Wong from Astria Clinic in Bangsar is again coming to the rescue with a medication I have not used much in the past, Xeomin. While I’m familiar with Botox, Xeomin seems to get less publicity, and I’m excited to learn more about this newbie (for me, apparently, it’s been around for years!).
Xeomin: The “Naked” Neurotoxin
As always, all treatments at Astria Clinic begin with a thorough consultation and explanation with Dr. Jinly. She explains that the FDA-approved injectable temporarily relaxes muscles, reducing the appearance of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, and other dynamic wrinkles caused by facial movements. It’s also used for medical conditions such as neck pain, eye spasms, and upper limb spasticity.
Dr Jinly tells me that Xeomin is a botulinum toxin type A, similar to Botox and Dysport. However, Xeomin is a “naked” neurotoxin, meaning that it does not contain the complexing proteins found in other botulinum toxins. The lack of additives in Xeomin means it is less likely to trigger the formation of antibodies, which can reduce its effectiveness over time. I’ve had a sneaking suspicion that my Botox is lasting less and less over the years. Although it’s uncommon, I wonder if I’ve built up some antibodies because of frequent use. I’m keen to see if there is a difference in durability with Xeomin.
How Xeomin Works
Xeomin works by blocking nerve signals to the muscles. This temporary muscle relaxation smooths the skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles. The effects of Xeomin typically last for several months, after which repeat injections are usually needed to maintain results.
Who is a Candidate for Xeomin?
Ideal Xeomin candidates are adults who are bothered by the appearance of frown lines and are in good general health. Patients with certain medical conditions, such as neuromuscular disorders, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, may not be suitable. It is important to consult with a qualified healthcare professional to determine if Xeomin is right for you.
The Xeomin Procedure
The Xeomin procedure is typically quick and minimally invasive. If you choose to have numbing cream, (I always do), the wait for the cream to work is often the longest part of the entire process.
After consulting with Dr. Jinly, I’m directed to a private room, where my skin is cleansed and the numbing cream is applied. I love this opportunity to dim the lights and take a luxurious 20-minute nap.
After I’ve awoken and the cream is removed, Dr Jinly marks my face, making a plan for the injection path. She then injects tiny drops across my brow, crows’ feet, and frown lines. A nurse alternates between applying ice packs to numb the area and reduce swelling and applying a vibrating tool to parts of my face as a distraction. The number of injections and the amount of Xeomin used depend on each individual’s specific needs and goals.
Is it painful?
With numbing cream, I barely feel the tiny pricks. The needle is very fine, and Dr Jinly is confident in her procedure, so the small injections are not too bothersome at all.
Downtime and Aftercare
There is typically no downtime associated with Xeomin treatment. Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure. However, avoiding strenuous exercise and excessive sun exposure for the first 24 hours is important. The Astria clinic team also recommends not touching the face or lying down for at least four hours after the treatment to prevent unintended spreading.
I bruise easily, and I’m often left with minute bruises around the injection sites. However, this time, I don’t have a single one! If needed, ice packs can help to reduce any discomfort or swelling.
Results
The results of Xeomin treatment typically become noticeable within a few days and can last for several months. Of course, results will vary depending on the individual. Most patients require repeat injections every three to four months to maintain the desired results. I see my face beginning to smooth on day three, and by one week later, the full effects have kicked in. I look fresh and well rested.
