Tean De Zhong (Josh) – Food & Beverage Supervisor, Penang Marriott Hotel

In this interview, Tean De Zhong (Josh), Food & Beverage Supervisor at Penang Marriott Hotel, shares a little about what the career involves.

What do you do?

I create new beverage recipes and fulfil guest requests by making drinks according to their preferences.

How did you get into the industry?

In 2020, I joined Angsana Teluk Bahang as a Food & Beverage server. After a year, the head bartender saw my potential and passion and decided to bring me onto the bar team.

What food memory from your childhood or travels stands out?

The most memorable trip for me was when I traveled to Koh Lipe with my friends. We enjoyed great food, stunning scenery, and a relaxed atmosphere. Sipping beer or cocktails while watching the sunset made it unforgettable.

What’s the best/ worst part of your job?

The best part of my job is engaging with guests. I gain valuable feedback and insights, which help me better understand their preferences.

Tean De Zhong’s favourite food and beverage pairing?

Fried chicken with a Cuba Libre, and roasted lamb with whisky on the rocks.

A day in the life of a bartender is …

Experimenting with different ingredients.

What does Tean De Zhong do for fun?

I enjoy researching and developing new ideas and recipes.

What would you like guests to know about Penang Marriott Hotel?

The Penang Marriott Hotel has a fantastic cocktail bar called The Great Room. We serve standard liquors and premium whiskies and wines, and we specialize in crafting exceptional cocktails.

How have you grown in your profession? What have you learned from your start in the industry until now? Any misconceptions?

I’ve grown by focusing on sharing the best experiences with guests and finding joy in their happiness. This approach has deepened my understanding of guest satisfaction and enhanced my skills in the industry.

What do you want people to know about being a bartender as a profession?

Many people believe anyone who knows how to mix drinks is a mixologist. However, a bartender focuses on creating beverages, while a mixologist specializes in developing new recipes.

What practices do you currently implement or hope to implement to work towards social responsibility and sustainability in the future?

In addition to honing my engagement and mixologist skills, I aim to reduce waste by using locally sourced ingredients and implementing recycling programs at our establishment. Additionally, I’m exploring ways to support community initiatives and promote responsible drinking practices among our guests.
