Antipodean came highly recommended by friends as a cafe to happily pass a morning in Bangsar. If you ignore the view from the window you could easily believe you were in a sophisticated nook in Melbourne or Sydney. The cool sharp setting with staff uniformed in black gives the place a more professional feel than many cafes in the area. The menu written on the walled chalkboard is quite extensive and similar to what you’d typically expect in a popular spot in cosmopolitan Australia. The all day breakfast menu with real BACON seems to be what everyone is  excited about. With pancakes, eggs of all sorts, pastries, cereal, beans and French toast all making an appearance too it’s hard to choose just one item. We finally decided on the pumpkin and sweet corn fritters with mushrooms, and the cheese & mushroom omelette. Both were well prepared and filling, not gourmet fare but unpretentious hearty grub under 20RM. A number of fresh juices were a hit with hubby, and I surprisingly enjoyed their coffee. Considering my most relished beans are generally sweeter South American blends, the slightly more alkaline, strong brew from Indonesia was an unexpected joy. I shall give this bustling joint another shot for lunch or dinner. Any suggestions on what to order?

  1. A lot of ppl tell me that they brew great coffee. I have yet to try it.. =)

  2. just like with beers, i'm woefully uneducated in the ways of coffee. i wouldn't be able to tell a south african blend from an indonesian brew, so the skills of the staff at antipodean are kinda wasted on me. but yeah, i do agree, this is one of telawi's nicer hangouts 😀

  3. Smitten: I enjoyed the coffee, but as mentioned I usually prefer something a little smoother and sweeter. This place has been packed every time we've been by though. I believe their coffee is Fair Trade too which is a bonus.
    Sean: I didn't start drinking coffee until I moved to South America in my early 20s. My parents always had instant – blah – so I'd never developed the taste. It all changed though in Venezuela when I tried my first cafe con leche (coffee with milk) – tiny cup of espresso with a rich smooth cream – hooked at first sip. 😉

  8. Hey, glad to know you've enjoyed Antipodean just as much as myself. If you're into a good bowl of fruit and yogurt, they have some that's worth trying. The smoked salmon omelette was delicious as well.

    i have tried their feta and pumpkin pasta – rate 7/10
    grilled chicken with tomatoes – rate 6.5/10
    the only downside is it aint comfortable, the place is indeed small and packed – they need to upgrade with all the business they are enjoying!
