City Views Across the Pool

Overlooking
the pool on the sixth floor of Best Western Premier, Hugos on 6 offers a
variety of ambiences suiting any mood. Stools and high tables by the pool
inspire orders of cocktails and bar snacks perhaps following a dip in the pool.
The light bright setting by the indoor bar provokes thoughts of beer and tapas,
while the casual dining area lit with funky material covered lamps further in might see pizza and casual meals on the
table. Come dressed in a suit or evening dress for an upscale date and you can
head further inside the restaurant for more formal table setting and service.

Happy
Hours between 6 and 8pm beg for your evening to begin by the pool for
sundowners. A full beverage list including classic and invented cocktails,
wine, spirits and beer all induce a sense of relaxation, especially when paired
with a golden sunset glimmering over the infinity pool. Choose to move to the
other side of the deck and you’ll be rewarded with the witching hour, when the
sun fades and the magical lights of the city’s icons glow.

In
just over two months of opening, whispers have circulated around the city of
delicious tapas coming from the Mediterranean and Oriental themed menu. Testing
out the rumours, we ordered three of the popular items: Pinchitos de Cordero – caramelized lamb skewers trimmed of excess fat and making use of a shoulder cut
are marinated in salt, pepper and Spanish paprika, layered with capsicum and
onion and, chaperoned with garlic aioli and a lemon wedge; Pollo a la Crema – free range chicken breast doused in a rich cream, rosemary and roast garlic sauce, again trimmed of fat, bone and skin, leaving fork tender meat and; Gambas Pil
Pil – fresh tiger prawns cooked in
sliced garlic, dried chili flakes, salt, pepper and olive oil. All were served with toasted ovals of baguette. Uncomplicated, but
making use of quality produce and simple preparation, we didn’t come across a
tapa we didn’t like.

Roma Tomato and Mozzarella Salad RM24

The
tapas portions were far from skimpy and if we were sensible people we could
have stopped there. In the good name though of food bloggers everywhere we
continued. Moving over to the “To Start With” menu, we found two salads to our
liking. The Roma Tomato and Mozzarella Cheese Salad sees the simple
combination of buffalo Mozzarella, red onion rings, thin wafers of crispy
baguette and frisee lettuce dressed in a balsamic reduction including sugar, olive
oil, salt and pepper. The Watermelon with Feta Cheese Salad is my
favourite salad for this month. I love how such simple combinations are often
the best items on any menu. I’ve already tried to recreate the dish for lunch
everyday this week. The key is the freshness of the ingredients. Freshly cubed
slices of red melon, super green watercress, red onion rings and slivers of soft
feta are drizzled with olive oil, a squeeze of lemon and sprinkled with salt
and pepper.

We’d
heard great things about the pizzas coming from the Hugo’s on 6 oven, so of
course had to prove the gossip right or wrong either way. Pizza with Bresaola
and Rucola was recommended by our waiter.
We were not disappointed with the suggestion. A super thin crust baked
on the spot with homemade tomato sauce, air-dried beef, large green leaves,
Parmesan shavings and extra virgin olive oil made a light and possibly healthy
dinner.

Powering
on, determined to fit in at least one dish from the mains selection, we
requested the Blackened Salmon. A strapping slice of sesame seed encrusted
pink fish came out marinated with miso, shoyu and a touch of honey. Set atop a
foundation of braised baby pak choy and trickled with a miso and honey reduction
this was another divinely wholesome meal.

The
dessert menu is a hodge podge of sweetness ranging from Orange and Lemon Tart
with Rosewater Cream to Assorted Baklava and even Ice Cream Sundaes make an
appearance. Learning from past mistakes of ordering one creamy dessert between
hubby and I with the idea of sharing, and judging from the excellent food we
had to this point, I cleverly ordered two of the Tiramisu. This classic
dessert came out in pretty martini glasses rimmed with strawberry coulis and
custard sugar. Almond praline, chocolate
chips, coffee soaked lady fingers and whirls of mascarpone cheese filled first
the glasses and then our stomachs completing our meal with smooth creaminess
and smiles.
Reason to visit: Watermelon and Feta
Salad, thin crusted simple pizzas, Blackened Salmon, tapas, glimmering sunsets
