The Meat Experts, Terrace at Hock Choon

Located in Terrace at Hock Choon, The Meat Experts is sure to make many a surrounding resident happy. Hock Choon supermarket has long been the ‘go to’ ghetto for expats in the area looking for comfort goodies from their home countries. We’ve lacked for a while however, a deli that offers a comprehensive range of cold cuts, cheeses and pork products. The Meat Experts though is set to fill that gap on this side of town.
The original outlet is well established in Damansara Heights, but this second location just opened in February this year, 2013 and, it seems, residents have not yet discovered the treasures it holds. Plenty of parking makes it an easy stop to pick up some meat for dinner or a party platter to entertain guests (or just yourself as the case may be).
Our first visit saw hubby’s dreams fast becoming reality when he found that The Meat Experts specialize in Italian and Spanish cold cuts and cheeses. I found my challenge set having difficulty wiping hubby’s dribble from his mouth fast enough to keep his shirt dry. His eyes glued to the display of cured meats mesmerized like a kid in a candy shop.

There was no escaping ordering a cold cut platter full of European cured meats. And… there was no stopping the carnivore in my family. Within minutes we’d clocked up a whole kilogram! :

(A side note, under normal circumstances this platter would most likely be enough for around 10 guests. It is now only three days later in my home and the meat is gone! The first to disappear were the long held favourites – Jamon Serrano, Jamon Iberico and Bresaola.)
After an entire kilogram of ten different types of meat, I managed to get a word in and a couple of cheeses on a plate too. Queso Manchego is one of my all time favourites from Spain and, while it can be found around the city, the brand found at the Meat Experts is something special – worth a trip. Four heavenly cheeses later: Queso Manchego  M (RM13.09/100gms); Mahon (RM11.39/ 100gms); Asiago (RM7.50/ 100gms) and; Zomorano 6M (RM13.75/100gms) and I too was a happy customer.

All we needed now was wine, and our evening was taken care of. But wait! The Meat Experts have that too! Yes, it’s a small offering, but it means not having to make another stop, doubly happy.
A freshly cut platter of cold cuts and cheeses, with a bottle or two of vino = a good night in, in my opinion. 
But it’s not all cold cuts and cheeses. The Meat Experts also have a reputation for burger patties, home made and brand name sausages, and frozen raw meat. Favourites are the Spanish Ribs and Traditional Dry Cured Back Bacon- regular and smoked – (a type of bacon that is air cured rather than water cured meaning that when it is cooked it doesn’t shrink, rather it maintains its lush consistency). So that went onto our bill as well – thoughts of juicy pan-fried bacon, runny eggs and thick slices of crusty bread crossed both our minds.

And so… once hubby’s happy coos had been diverted from the deli, he began delving deep into the freezer box. Seemed the options were just too irresistible and… we ended up with a few more items in our shopping basket. From the sausage section the Vermont Maple Syrup Breakfast Sausages (RM25/250gms) caught his eye. Mumbles of inviting Canadian friends for breakfast and impressing them with these sausages, made from premium cuts of pork and real maple syrup, were part of the ranting.  Hog’s Pudding (RM29.90/ 100gms) – one giant round sausage – and a pack of six UK Pork Linconshire Sausages (RM29.90/ 100gms) saw promises of inviting the Brits for brekkie too. Either way weekend breakfast was looking good with a big fry up and friends.

Well, I finally dragged hubby away (leaving a puddle of saliva as a reminder he was there), but the guys at The Meat Experts will no doubt see us again.
Reason to visit: high quality selection of Italian and Spanish cold cuts and cheeses, home made and brand name sausages, an easy party platter option (and a quick stop for wine too!)
