What a treat an afternoon at W Taipei’s AWAY Spa is. Far from your ordinary cookie cutter spa, W Hotel’s signature outlet is just as refreshing for the mind as it is for the body.
Bubbles, waves of white and gently glowing furniture are set in a space with uncomplicated lines and a super clean feel. The modern design of the area inspires, even before treatments have begun.
Be sure to come early or plan to stay late to take full advantage of the facilities. A contemporary beachy scene is set in the changing rooms with bleached wood, complemented by beige and pale aquamarine tile mosaics. Sauna and steam rooms are accompanied by three Jacuzzis of differing levels of heat– cold, warm and hot. Bubble jets in each invigorate the body and, a central ice fountain encourages you to awaken your senses with distinct changes in temperatures.

Relaxation beds are connected to individual TV screens with headsets ensuring minimal disruption to other guests. A massage chair and a pile of magazines could see you happily pass quite some time in the restful room.
Rain showers, hairdryers, toothbrushes, tampons, hairspray, moisturizer, make-up remover and deodorant ensure guests can be ready to take on the world again upon leaving the spa.

We booked in for a massage and were lucky that the Double Delight treatment room was available. This couple’s room features a Jacuzzi and postcard perfect view of Taipei 101.

A cool lemon and elderflower mocktail, garnished with cranberry ice in the shape of a starfish, and a moist refresher towel, welcomed us to AWAY Spa. These few minutes on the lounge were utilized for a conversation with our therapists determining personal preferences for the treatment to come.

Body Refuel, a one hour massage (TWD$3100), promised an “invigorative sports therapy approach focused on providing therapeutic support.” Having had a good run earlier in the morning it sounded just right for our slightly tight and tired muscles.
Making full use of the effects of aromatherapy, two different oils were used during the massage. At first a relaxing soft scented rose oil was rubbed into the body bringing calm and sleepiness. A technique of placing firm force on pressure points moved into longer deeper strokes coaxing knots out of muscles. As the session was finishing, a stronger smelling fragrance of frankincense was used to refresh and reinvigorate the body and mind in preparation to rise again.
A departure drink, a choice of hot ginger tea or chilled blackcurrant juice, was served with a crunchy piece of pumpkin seed biscotti, proving the AWAY Spa to ace all details from start to finish.
