More rustic and colourful than the other beach clubs with its thatched roofs and splashes of vibrant yellow and blue, Bimi Beach Club claims to be Phuket’s only all day party beach club. As we are early and it is raining, we just enjoy the upbeat chilled sounds from the high quality sound system, relaxing in the unpretentious ambience. The Bimi menu offers light beach food, both Thai and International, for lunch and slightly more substantial offerings for dinner.

Our schedule dictates lunch, but of course we are immediately distracted by the sensational sounding signature cocktails, all but one of which are amusingly named for recognisable movie, and the last, we discover is a very famous Thai ‘scary ghost movie.’  OK!
Our first Hollywood cocktail arrives, and I have to say Oh – Wow! Avatar comes in a pint glass! No wonder it is the house favourite. Monica declares it a winner on first sip and I do have to agree! Cachaca is raw cane spirit and can be quite rugged but this beautifully balanced drink incorporates rambutan, sweet and sour orchid, Thai basil leaves, lemon peel and is topped up and sprite. I think it is one of the most refreshing beach drinks I’ve ever had the pleasure to taste.

The Mermaid is also a very mellow mix that I could sip on all day. I love that there are still chunks of fruit in the drink. Kiwi and sour apple liqueur melded with vodka. It is, frankly, fabulous. An instant new favourite for beach-side drinking. Lunch, afternoon, or evening, it really wouldn’t matter. Cocktails are all THB300 by the glass and THB800 by the jug, except from 5-7pm where they are two for one during Happy Hour. Wonderful!

As it’s still quite early for cocktail testing we’re happy to see fast food service. Grilled Crab Cake (THB190) is attractively served with a good deal of salsa on the top. We’re happy with these, which have a much softer texture than other crab cakes we’ve tried. They are freshly made with heaps of yummy salsa, that’s not too sweet.

Mango Salad (Yum Mamuang THB 200) is served with soft shell crab.  Green mango is sharp to taste and cut roughly so you get nice thick wedges to contrast with the crunchy sweet soft shell crab. The dressing has a nice bite to it and oodles of cashew nuts. If you’ve never tried soft shell this would be a good time to branch out and do so.

Moving to the European side of the menu we taste an unusual Tuna Burger (THB 300) that is very meaty and dense, served on a soft Brioche bun. This comes with a side of coleslaw and plenty of crispy fries. There are of course plenty of regular burgers on the menu for those who like grill.

One for the spice lovers amongst us is Linguine Pasta (THB220) with pepperoncino, chili, garlic, and olive oil. The freshly made linguini is served al dente. The dish earns its name. I happen to be a chili aficionado, but this one does need a drink with it. If you don’t like chilies, but want pasta, be safe and choose the carbonara instead!

We’re persuaded to try the Bimi Grilled Pizza (THB270), and we’re really glad we did. This incredibly light and crispy base is prepared on an outdoor grill and it works remarkably well as the toppings remain fresh rather than baked. We love the plentiful chunky tasty tomato sauce mingled with melty lumps of mozzarella. Topped with fresh rocket and grated parmesan, this is a very natural tasting dish and our favourite of the day so far.

Finishing the meal, I eschew dessert for a fab sounding cocktail, with rum and expresso, while Monica selects a couple of scoops of ice cream to finish with. But then gives in, asking ‘Would another fruity cocktail be too much?’ We decide not, as we’re only here once after all!
The ice cream is sweet and refreshing. The Pistachio is quite strong flavoured, reminding me of marzipan  Monica finds it nice and creamy.

The Batman is not for the diet conscious as half the glass is whipped cream. Otherwise it is strong sweet coffee with a good hit of rum.

Pee Mak Phra Khanong (named for that scary movie) is another great fruit cocktail, I can really taste the lychee and lime with the rum and there are a good many pineapple slithers in the mix. Again I love the way the fruit is chopped up and not blended in. The flavours are fresher and truer.

Even though it is off-season and a slightly overcast day, we’ve thoroughly enjoy the refreshing breeze and the sound of the surf on the sands. We’re told the party atmosphere really starts at 2pm with an afternoon DJ spinning what’s new on the Thai and international music scene. We’d walked past on a previous evening and loved the large central shower where beach lovers were cooling off before grabbing a cocktail, and remarked that this looked like a great place for sundowners. It’s proven to have some of the best cocktails we’ve tasted yet in Phuket.
Reasons to visit: funky unpretentious beach side eatery with freshly made food and yummy cocktails.
