Salsa Bar, Grand Hyatt Bali, Nusa Dua, Indonesia

Bali never ceases to ‘wow’ with its unfaltering line-up of sensational beach bars. From hip and crowded, to exclusive and intimate, the Island of the Gods has more than its measure of quality watering holes in impressive locations. Just when I thought I’d seen more than my fair share of them, Salsa Bar at Grand Hyatt Nusa Dua crossed our radar.

A garden lined pathway winds up the side of Salsa Verde, Grand Hyatt Nusa Dua’s Italian beachfront restaurant, and on to the lush grounds of Salsa Bar. Set on the rooftop, the outlet benefits from cool ocean drafts and stunning panoramas of the Nusa Dua coastline.

Pathway to Salsa Bar
The tops of palm trees border the edge, while frangipanis and manicured hedges sprout from the verdant rooftop lawn. Lanterns gently warm the atmosphere with soft illumination and a Balinese bale provides shelter from the sun’s final fading rays.

Sofas Looking Out to Sea
We congratulate ourselves on arriving in time for happy hours where we’re gifted with special drink deals (buy 1 free 1) from 6pm – 8pm. We’re here for a pre-dinner tipple and note the menu features many tropical classics.

The Bar and Tables
Hubby plumps for an Angung Lava (Rp. 152 000), which combines rum, coconut liqueur, strawberry, pineapple and banana. It’s thick and separates into two colours, strawberry red on the bottom and frothy beige banana on top, before it arrives. A good stir with the swivel stick, and a giant swig puts an enormous grin on hubby’s face. I taste it too and see why he’s smiling. It has both the consistency and taste of a fruit smoothie.
My Nusa Dua Sunset (Rp. 152 000) is a refreshing mix of gin, Campari, apricot brandy, triple sec, orange juice and pineapple juice. Mine resembles a tall glass of juice. We learn that Salsa Bar captures a beautiful sunrise and the thought of cocktails for brekkie as the sun wakes up crosses our mind. The smiling bartender assures us however that the bar doesn’t open until 4pm.

Cocktails
Mojitos and Margaritas are much ordered beverages made to a standard recipe here. The Chocolate Bunny with Kahlua and Bailey’s is popular amongst the ladies, but our favourite is the Lime Crush, a simple blend or rum, lime and sugar, with a sugar cane swivel stick.Indeed it’s a pleasant experience any time of the evening, but a 5pm arrival allows an hour or so to soak up the grand views before dark sets in.
