With my deep affection for carbs, Yin’s Sourdough Bakery and Café sure looked inviting on my Instagram feed. Upon further investigation, I found that Su Yin, the baker, promises to serve only Real Bread. This is bread that is made without the use of artificial additives and processing aid of any kind. Their bread takes two days to prepare using wild yeast and lactobacilli bacteria to ferment the dough and make it rise. This desire for a healthier style of bread also transfers to the rest of the menu, where we find lots of whole ingredients, minimally processed.

Yin’s Sourdough Bakery and Café Menu

Yin’s Sourdough Bakery and Café offers both a hot menu and some items for the pantry. Following the made-from-scratch philosophy, the grocery items are gourmet in nature and welcome additions to our shelves.

For the Pantry

I must confess a profound love for nut butter, and spooning them directly from the jar my preferred method of consumption. Yin’s Sourdough Bakery and Café’s Almond Butter (RM 28) is thick and rich, infused with coconut oil and absolutely spoonable. Of course, there are no preservatives, additives or artificial flavouring, and the oil not only gives it a creamier consistency but adds a mild taste of coconut to the almonds as well.

Yin’s Gourmet Granola (RM 15.90, 200g) is a mix of oats, cranberries, raisins, black sesame and almonds. It’s moistened with rice bran oil and gently sweetened with honey. I am happy to nibble it on its own, but it also makes an excellent topping for yoghurt.

The team behind Yin’s Sourdough Bakery and Café also sell locally roasted coffee beans. The Pinang Blend (RM 26.50, 230 g) features beans from Guatemala and Brazil in a medium roast. It’s a perfectly balanced blend with a soft body, smooth palate and hint of fruit in the finish. It does well with or without milk.

For Your Table

You make a safe bet with an order of any of the baked items from the hot menu. The Wild Mushroom Pizza (RM 37.10, 9 inches) is a lovely base with puffy edges and a bit of a chew to the dough. Pesto, rocket leaves and grana Padano really add a wallop of flavour, and the mushrooms have been treated to light marination – maybe a touch of balsamic?

For a healthy meal, the Keto Nourish Bowl (RM 25.45) is a fine choice. A cauliflower quinoa rice, cherry tomatoes, fresh lettuce, and Japanese cucumber is topped with a fillet of seabass. Chimichurri sauce is served apart for your own addition.

The Baked Egg with Sourdough Toast (RM 19.10) is a great breakfast. Capsicum, shimeji mushroom, pumpkin and eggplant are baked together with the egg in a tomato coulis. On its own, it’s very rich but spread on the accompanying slice of sourdough, it’s just right.

An interesting lunch or brekkie combo is the Bagel with Avocado Rotkraut and Cheddar (RM 12.70). The pickled red cabbage certainly contributes tang to the stuffing. I find the combination with creamy avo and cheese so filling I can only get halfway through. (Perfect to warm up for brekkie tomorrow morning.)

Lastly, and another item suitable for breakfast, lunch or brunch, is the Vegetarian Burrito (RM 21.20). The tortilla wrap has an attractive rustic quality to it – I’m assuming it’s made in house. Turmeric basmati rice, black beans, roasted eggplant, roasted capsicum, tomato pico, guacamole, kefir sour cream and mozzarella pack the insides. Again, I would be satisfied with half and be happy to keep the second piece for lunch or dinner the following day.

  1. We can get sourdough at a bakery here once a week, on Tuesdays only…and come Tuesday every week, I feel too lazy to go out so I have not gone to buy and try yet. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

  2. That pizza looks really good!

  3. I am not a pizza fan but I will probably like this mushroom pizza.
