Following a successful first visit to LS Clinic Mid Valley, I return to see what else could be done to slow down the ageing process. I’m most concerned about sagging skin and wrinkles around the mouth and below the cheeks. Dr Jaswine Chew suggests a filler, Radiesse, as a solution.

What is Radiesse?

Radiesse is an injectable filler made of calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) gel microspheres. The components also occur naturally in the human body.

How does it work?

At first, the gel gives the skin volume when injected beneath the surface. The filler is eventually absorbed by the body, but the CaHA stimulates cells to produce collagen, in essence, fabricating its own filler. Online consumer reports say it lasts anywhere between one and two years.

What is Radiesse used for?

Radiesse is commonly used on the face and hands to plump up the skin and reduce the signs of ageing. In my case, it’s injected below the cheeks and nasolabial folders, adding volume and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Procedure at LS Clinic Mid Valley

At LS Clinic Mid Valley, my face is first cleaned, and pre-treatment photos are taken. Then a numbing cream is applied and left to do its work. I don’t have a high pain threshold, so I’m also given some oral painkillers. Once my skin is numb, Dr Jaswine carefully assesses my skin and marks the areas she will inject. Then it’s time for the needle!

Despite trying almost every aesthetic treatment imaginable, I’m still nervous (and pain-aversive). Fortunately, the team is ready to assist with a small vibrating massager distracting my thoughts away from the needle. There are only four injection points anyway, as Dr Jaswine uses a cannula to spread the filler. This reduces the risk of any vessels being punctured and also minimises wounds that would need to heal post-treatment.

Dr Jaswine clearly has much experience with this procedure. She works quickly and skillfully, checking in on my comfort and explaining each step throughout.

Is it painful?

Well, yes, a little bit, but more accurately, I’d say it’s more uncomfortable than painful. A local anaesthetic is injected just before the filler is introduced, greatly reducing discomfort. There is a light sting with the initial needle, and then a weird filling as the Radiesse is spread with the cannula. It doesn’t take long, and with the support team distracting with their tools and humour, time passes swiftly.

Radiesse Results

The results are dramatic and instant. “Wow, it’s like ironing out the wrinkles,” says one of Dr Jaswine’s assistants. Indeed my face is fuller, and my lines have smoothed out. You can see in the before and after photos below just how effective the Radiesse filler has been.

Downtime

I had no downtime with Radiesse, leaving the clinic and heading straight to dinner with a girlfriend afterwards. Would I recommend a photo shoot immediately after? No… but I returned to work and continued social activities without incident. For two to three days, you could see the points of injection, which could easily be confused for a little skin outbreak. Bruising appeared on the second day, fading with the use of Arnica gel (the team gave me a little container to take home) over the week. Ten days later, there was no evidence at all of the procedure other than the wanted plumped impact.

Radiesse Filler Aftercare

The only things required for aftercare are avoiding excessive exercise and heat for 24 hours. The night of, it’s not recommended to sleep on your face, and also facials/ massages should be avoided for a few weeks.

Unlike many aesthetic treatments I’ve tried, the effects of fillers are dramatic and instant.
