Torrié Coffee – Portugal
Monica Tindall
As a self-confessed javaphile, I’ve had the fortune of visiting several coffee plantations and roasting facilities around the world. However, most I’ve what I’ve seen have been smaller-scale businesses. Recently, in Porto, I jumped at the opportunity for a look inside an industrial coffee processing plant, Torrié, a household name in Portugal.
Torrié, a renowned coffee brand founded in the 1980s, is based in Rio Tinto on the outskirts of Porto, Portugal. Over the years, it has evolved into one of the leading coffee brands in the country. With a dedication to product excellence and service quality, Torrié swiftly transitioned from a regional operator to a national and eventually international structure.
The heart of Torrié’s coffee lies in its blend of Arabica and Robusta beans sourced from different parts of the world. Roasted to a medium-dark level, the result is a coffee with a rich, full-bodied flavour, very much the preference of coffeeholics in Europe.
Torrié has undergone strategic transformations throughout its journey to adapt to changing markets while staying true to its core values of quality and rigour. It embraced a more informal and dynamic brand identity in the 1990s, targeting consumers seeking a modern coffee experience. As it ventured into the take-home channel in 2004, Torrié further strengthened its connection with consumers, adopting a more emotional positioning.
In 2009, Torrié reached a milestone in its history, driven by a commitment to innovation while preserving its coffee-roasting expertise. The brand strategy was revitalised, aligning with the latest market trends and introducing new products to meet evolving consumer preferences.
Today, Torrié stands as a young, urban, dynamic, and interactive brand, reflecting its solid growth and commitment to social and environmental concerns, as well as health and well-being.
Central to the success of Torrié is its unwavering dedication to quality. The brand’s Quality Policy serves as a driving force, encouraging continuous improvement and market adaptation. From monitoring market trends to investing in innovation such as checkweigher machines, differentiation, and food safety, Torrié involves its entire organisation in a cross-cutting commitment to quality.
Torrié offers diverse coffee products, including ground coffee, whole beans, and capsules. Additionally, they produce a line of coffee drinks, such as espresso, latte, and cappuccino.
Renowned for its high quality and consistent flavour, Torrié’s reputation extends far beyond Portugal’s borders, with its products being cherished by coffee enthusiasts in various countries around the globe. Torrié reached Malaysian shores over the pandemic, and the product list is expanding. Most exciting is the availability of compostable coffee pods that fit Nespresso machines. These compostable capsules are cheaper, better for the environment, and have the rich, full-bodied flavour the brand is acclaimed for.
