In a cosy corner of Bangsar, Chez Gaston offers approachable bistro-style French food with satisfying, nourishing, and filling cuisine. In its five years of operation, the menu has expanded to accommodate international influences and cater to various price ranges. We had the privilege of savouring dishes from the main and the lunch menu, delighting in well-made, hearty food in the casual setting.

With the generous portion size, we could have started and ended the meal with our first order alone. My Big Croque Monsieur (RM 48, also the header photo) lives up to its name, arriving in monster dimensions – we recommend sharing among friends. The sandwich, with crunchy, fluffy brioche toast and light and creamy cheese, is too delicious to go to waste, so despite knowing there was much more to come, we couldn’t help but keep biting in. It also comes with a side of thickly cut, satisfyingly crunchy fries.

The lunch menu introduces the Egg Meurette (RM 33) to Malaysian audiences as an alternative to the widely loved eggs benedict. The dishes are very similar, but the meurette features red wine sauce rather than hollandaise over the poached egg. This sauce adds a unique acidity to the dish, going well with the savouriness of the poached egg.

Another well-loved French classic, the Cordon Bleu (RM 29), features chicken that is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The cheese the dish is stuffed with is revealed in a satisfying pull and adds a savoury touch to the dish.

Inspired by wider European flavours, the Lamb Skewer (RM 39) is another tasty lunch item, skillfully balancing both smoky and spicy flavours. The cubes of meat are alternated with pieces of capsicum and onions on the skewers. The roasted potatoes with strong garlic aromas bulk up the plate.

From the a la carte menu, Aubergines Grillees Fromage Frais (RM 28) – grilled, sliced and stuffed eggplant served with pesto, is a good beginning. The aubergine had a nice char, adding a smoky flavour that paired very well with the savoury creaminess of the cheese. I particularly enjoyed the walnut crunch and nuttiness that complemented the fresh pesto. This dish was a worthy vegetarian option and a promising taster of what was to follow.

A staple of French cuisine, Lobster Thermidor (RM 160) was a treat. The sweetness of the fresh lobster was revealed below a mountain of cheese, creating a hearty and satisfying meal alongside the ratatouille and baked potatoes. We especially appreciated the lobster’s preparation as the chef had pre-chopped the lobster into bite-sized pieces before returning it to the shell to bake, making the dining experience all the more enjoyable.

Ballotine de Merou (RM 62), another excellent seafood choice, is a grouper fish rolled in ballotine (leg meat from chicken) and served with a savoury veloute. While still honouring its bistro-style origins, the plating of this dish was particularly impressive, with the fish placed cleanly on a bed of creamy mashed potato and topped with seaweed. The dish tasted as good as it looked, with the fish being fresh, soft and flaky and the mashed potatoes creamy and seasoned wonderfully with herbs and butter.

Another worthy seafood option is the Daurade a L’escabeche (58) or Sea Bream in Escabeche sauce, drawing the flavours of the sauce from Spanish influences. As with the grouper, the sea bream fillet was cooked to a tender texture that contrasted its crispy skin. The vibrant sauce completed the dish, pairing well with the sweetness of the fish while adding a bit of acidity.

The first of our meat mains was the Carre d’agneau or Lamb Rack (RM 135). The lamb was crusted beautifully with pesto and garlic, synergising well with the mint sauce and carrot puree. The seasoning gave the meat a nice herbiness, and the lamb was tender and pink in the middle.

The Blanquette de Veau (105) was another delight, with the veal braised for four hours to reach fall-off-the-fork appeal. We welcomed the rice side to soak up the sauce and not lose a drop of flavour. The onions, carrots, and mushrooms in the gravy were caramelised nicely, lending additional oomph.

Chef Flo’s Apple Tarte Tatin (RM 26) is one of our top sweet picks at Chez Gaston. Caramelised apples are moist while retaining some of their tartness, and the flaky base is a flawless canvas. Chef Flo calls his house-made creations’ grandma style’ – no frills, classic and satisfying desserts validated by the test of time.
