Prettify Dot Com Hair Salon Kindness at its Core

Monica Tindall

Nedda Bakhtiary, the director of Prettify Dot Com in Sungei Wang Plaza, isn’t just about making people look good; she’s about empowering them. Captured by her kindness during the pandemic when she offered complimentary haircuts to frontliners, it became clear her compassion extended far beyond a few free trims.

Empowering Through Skills

Recognising the limitations of temporary aid, Nedda has been tackling unemployment and poverty in KL by offering hairdressing courses to the B40 group and refugees free of charge. This provides attendees with valuable skills for sustainable livelihoods, empowering vulnerable communities who face challenges building long-term careers. The course, covering hairstyling products and costs, also aims to inspire other salons to contribute to community upliftment.

Building Connection, Creating Opportunity

Nedda, originally from Iran, speaks Farsi, the common language of many Afghan refugees. This, combined with her genuine willingness to help, allowed her to quickly connect with and support this community. Word spread, and soon the UN Office also began sending those in need her way.

Investing in the Future

Nedda believes that training, though costly, offers a far greater and more enduring impact than temporary assistance. Skilled workers have better opportunities, fostering financial independence and a brighter future.

Beyond Cuts and Colour

While hair services, especially her renowned colouring and highlights, are a core offering, Prettify Dot Com is a full-service salon. They provide makeup services, manicures and eyelash extensions, all using well-known brands like Wella for a reliable experience.

From Humble Beginnings to Sparkling Success

Eight years ago, the salon started as a small, neglected shop lot in Sungei Wang Plaza. Through sheer determination and hard work, Nedda transformed it. She painted, furnished with second-hand finds, and eventually expanded, renting the adjacent space. Now, with the help of a professional designer, the salon boasts a chic, intimate ambience with subtle pinks and sparkling accents.

The Colour Purple

Nedda is a skilled stylist who takes the time to understand her clients. Initially she suggested a dark brown base with copper highlights for me. However, after scrolling through my collection of past hair colour changes, she suggested something different and boldly proposed a vibrant purple transformation. She said this would complement my complexion and eye colour. The result? A fun change that has been a conversation starter to say the least.

Nail Service

Nedda’s talented colleague, Htu, assists with hair washing and nail services. In perfect harmony with my new purple locks, she painted my fingers a sparkling shade of lavender.
