If you’re looking for a little piece of peace not too far away from the hustle and bustle of Pavilion Bukit Jalil, you can grab a sweet treat at Kayla Bakehouse. This quaint café is the place to get your French-style baked breads and pastries with a Japanese twist. The Nordic-style minimalist décor and soft jazz music create a peaceful ambience that feels both trendy and homely. The added charm is the glass windows that give diners a clear view into the baking process, from the mixing of their signature dough to when it comes fresh out of the oven and straight to the display.
Kayla Bakehouse – Bukit Jalil
Affectionately named after their partner’s daughter, Kayla Bakehouse’s popular items are their Mille Feuille, whole bread, and sandwiches made fresh daily. The master baker, Mr. Kok Wee, who hails from Singapore, has more than 15 years of experience in baking. He has perfected the art of combining both French and Japanese baking to create a softer bun, which he says is preferred by the locals. The secret lies in their sourdough, which has taken more than 10 years to develop; it is untainted and made of organic rye flour mixed with mineral water.
Kayla Bakehouse pairs Kok Wee’s baking prowess with flavours introduced by Carmen, their operations manager, who has more than 10 years of experience in the food industry. “Everyone’s comfort food is different,” says Carmen, who helped recommend the menu at Kayla Bakehouse be made up of foods that bring comfort and joy instead of just what’s hip and trendy. It’s also why their clientele primarily comprises frequent regulars from the neighbourhood.
Mille Feuille
Their hit item, the Mille-Feuille, is a classic French dessert of light puff pastry layered with luscious pastry cream. You can get both the sweet and unique savoury variant here at Kayla.
Bite into the crispy golden layers of puff pastry in between vanilla cream and fresh mangoes in the Mango Mille Feuille (RM 18). This would be the perfect choice if you prefer something that’s not too sweet but still a feast for the eyes.
For a naughty indulgence in rich Belgian chocolate, the decadent chocolate ganache in the Chocolate Mille Feuille (RM 18) compliments the puff pastry with delight in every bite.
Lastly, if savoury is your cup of tea, then the Feta Cheese Mille Feuille (RM 18) is for you. With crumbled feta and velvety béchamel, this item caters to the not-so-sweet tooth (sweet-toothed?) but still delivers a burst of sweetness from the cherry tomatoes.
Bagels
Their big chunky Bagels (from RM 6) with options of poppyseed or multi-grain can be paired with cream cheese or their creamy homemade Strawberry Cream Cheese (add RM4). Their fluffy bagels are fairly filling and might need a little more than one serving of cream cheese to go through a whole bagel.
Baked Goodies
Generous with their use of bananas and chocolate chips, their Banana Bread (RM 7) is a great grab-and-go item. If you want a simple pick-me-up, that is just right.
It isn’t a French bakery without the classic Pain Au Chocolate (RM 10). The layers perfectly balance both buttery and flaky with a rich chocolate centre.
Kayla Bakehouse Sandwiches
Prepared with the precision of French culinary artistry, the spiced chicken is the star of the Chicken Cajun Croissant (RM 17), paired with homemade mayo, pickles, and fresh greens.
The crispy, freshly baked croissant holding the Avocado Egg Sandwich (RM 16) contrasts beautifully with the soft guacamole, sliced hard-boiled eggs, and fresh greens.
In the Ham & Cheese Muffin (RM 14), a classic English muffin is paired with ham, cheddar cheese and fresh greens – a no-brainer when spoilt for choice.
Kayla Bakehouse Drinks Menu
Kayla Bakehouse’s coffee is made using a house blend of locally roasted beans and prepared to perfection. Their Flat White (RM 12) or Iced Latte (RM 13) is a must to pair with their pastries. Their Matcha Latte (RM 14) or Iced Chocolate (RM 14) hits the spot just right for a non-coffee option. The option of Oat Milk (add RM3) is also available. For those attempting a zero-waste lifestyle, note that while hot drinks are served in reusable cups, iced beverages come in plastic.
