The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur, offers an urban oasis in the heart of the city. Located on the third floor of the hotel, this sanctuary boasts private treatment rooms seamlessly connected to a breathtaking deck and infinity pool, along with a host of comprehensive wellness amenities.
It’s dark and cool inside, a direct contrast from the sun-filled pool deck immediately outdoors – of which, spa guests are welcome to take a dip, and use the changeroom facilities.
Facilities
The pool at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur, must be one of the busiest in KL. It’s often filled with expats who’ve purchased a gym package, and international guests soaking up the KLCC park views while appreciating the attentive bar service. Access for spa-goers is an added bonus not included in many hotel spas around the city.
In the changeroom, there are two Jacuzzi tubs, a steam room and sauna. Lockers are provided alongside showers and powder room amenities. It’s recommended to arrive around 45 minutes before your appointment to take advantage of the Jacuzzi, steam and sauna. It gets the mind into relaxation mode and opens up the pores, readying the body to fully take advantage of your session.
The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Menu
Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of Chinese, European, Thai, and Malaysian traditions, The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur, provides a diverse array of world-inspired treatments. From massages and wraps to scrubs, facials, and nail care, each experience is crafted to honour the individuality of every guest.
Upon arrival, we’re greeted with the calming aromas of hot ginger or cool lemongrass teas, served in the softly lit waiting lounge. I appreciate the kick of spice and minimal sugar in the hot beverage. At the same time, Han Sen says the cool drink is the perfect entrance on this warm afternoon.
Here, we fill out a questionnaire allowing therapists to tailor treatments to personal preferences and needs. We’re booked in for the Quintessence Escape (RM 1 140), a three-hour session curated exclusively for Mandarin Oriental Spas worldwide. The aromatherapy oil is predetermined as part of the package. However, if you book something from the a la carte menu, you can choose your preferred essence. I found Quintessence’s mix of mandarin, ginger, and frankincense both invigorating and soothing.
Quintessence Escape
In our private rooms, soothing melodies and gentle lighting set the scene for the three-hour session. Each room contains a shower and toilet for ultimate privacy. Robes, slippers and mesh disposable underwear (nice, none of those unattractive diaper-resembling puffy panties) are provided.
Welcoming Foot Ritual
The ritual begins with a Tibetan chime, followed by a foot bath. During the light tootsie scrub, my therapist, Bibiana, reviews my questionnaire and outlines the session to come. Her communication skills are excellent. She encourages me to ask questions and to openly discuss preferences for pressure, temperature and any other adjustments along the way.
Quintessence Body Scrub
The treatment beds are long enough for even my outstretched Western frame. Heated and automated, they adjust to cradle my lower and upper body in various postures. This thoughtful design alleviates pressure from my lower back, ensuring a comfortable experience.
The Quintessence Body Scrub begins with a calming breathing ritual. Next comes the wet scrub, applied shoulder to toe on both sides. While I usually find this type of scrub a tad messy, Bibie’s technique is impressive. She works in sections, covering completed areas with warm towels and ensuring every inch is addressed before moving on. By the time I step into the shower to rinse, my skin feels transformed – supple, moisturised, and smooth.
Oriental Essence Massage
The Oriental Essence Massage is the signature treatment of The Spa at Mandarin Oriental and is offered globally. It incorporates Quintessence oil crafted with ginger, mandarin, and frankincense, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, promoting circulation, and enhancing immunity (also available for purchase as an oil or lotion if you enjoy its scent). During the massage, Bibie uses the heels of hands, thumbs, and forearms with light to medium pressure while also customising the experience to address specific needs such as stiff shoulders, providing additional attention and incorporating gentle stretching and hip rotations into the session.
Bespoke Facial
The Bespoke Facial is a customised treatment designed for your unique skin type. It incorporates all the classics: cleansing, exfoliation, toning, serum application, a relaxing massage, a nourishing mask, and finally, a protective layer of moisturiser and sunscreen. But the real star of the show is the magnificent face and head massage. You can choose a light touch if you prefer, but I personally advocate for a firmer pressure, which is said to stimulate muscles and provide a subtle lifting effect.
Relaxation Time
The Quintessence Escape concludes with the gentle sound of the chime once more, signalling the end of the session. Upon awakening, I’m greeted with freshly squeezed orange juice and a small bowl of nuts. I’m invited to take a few moments to gently ease back into the outside world, allowing the tranquillity of the experience to linger.
