In the heart of Siem Reap, amidst the ancient wonders of Angkor Wat and lively Pub Street, lies the Bensley Collection Pool Villas at Shinta Mani Angkor. Designed by the visionary hotel designer Bill Bensley, renowned for his extravagant and immersive creations, this exclusive retreat offers an unforgettable experience.
Bensley’s architectural genius is legendary. With a portfolio that spans the globe, from the lush rainforests of Bali to the rugged landscapes of Bhutan, Bensley’s creations are characterised by their meticulous attention to detail, whimsical charm, and seamless integration with the surrounding environment. He weaves narratives into his designs, transforming spaces into living stories.
At the Bensley Collection, the Khmer king Jayavarman VII takes centre stage. Bold installations depicting the folds of his royal robes adorn the walls, a subtle homage to his pioneering spirit mirrored in the innovative design of the villas. The opulence, however, is never ostentatious. Bensley masterfully combines Khmer influences with contemporary flourishes, resulting in luxurious and culturally sensitive spaces. Locally sourced materials like silk and dark wood create a sense of warmth. At the same time, the plush furnishings and state-of-the-art amenities ensure unparalleled comfort.

Each of the ten exclusive villas boasts a private 30-foot pool, garden courtyard, rooftop terrace, and outdoor bathtub embraced by a private garden. Floor-to-ceiling windows seamlessly blend the lush greenery with the interiors, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living.
The rooftop sky garden, adorned with tropical flora and shaded by billowing sails, provides a serene retreat with a good book or unwinding under the stars. In the evenings, the addition of mosquito netting and flickering candles sets the stage for magical, insect-free relaxation in the cooler air.
The pool’s allure is irresistible. Accessible from the courtyard or through sliding glass doors from the bedroom, it invites leisurely morning dips or floating breakfasts delivered straight to the water.
The bed, enveloped in a cocoon of crisp linen sheets, promises nights of restful slumber, while the glass-walled bathroom, featuring a rain shower and double basins overlooking lush greenery, is an invitation to pure indulgence.
The mini bar is thoughtfully stocked with an array of beverages, including soft drinks, beer, wine, and even almond milk, noting my preferences. It also has a freezer drawer brimming with ice, and several snacks, such as cookies and vegetable chips, are in glass jars in the pantry.
The villa’s décor is an eclectic blend of antiques, contemporary conveniences, and thoughtful amenities. A large Smart TV and quality Bose speakers cater to entertainment needs, and high-speed internet ensures seamless communication and connectivity. The inclusion of a portable pocket WiFi further enhances convenience, allowing guests to stay connected even while exploring the wonders of Siem Reap.
Every detail is meticulously curated for the utmost comfort and convenience, from clearly labelled lights to inclusive laundry services, ensuring a truly pampered experience. As a final touch, the villa is infused with soothing scents of aromatherapy and fragrant flowering gardens, pleasing our noses each time we return.
Bensley Butler
But the service is the true pièce de résistance of the Bensley Collection Pool Villas experience. Discreet yet attentive, our personal Bensley Butler anticipates every need before we’ve even voiced them. From unpacking our luggage to drawing a bath covered in the petals of 64 lotus flowers precisely arranged in a floral mosaic on its surface, the personalised touch elevates “service” to an entirely new level. Whether we crave a refreshing bevvie poolside, an itinerary for exploring the ancient temples, or just some insight into local culture, our Bensley Butler is knowledgeable, kind, thoughtful and always ready to assist.
Location
The location of the Bensley Collection Pool Villas adds another layer of allure. Tucked away within the Shinta Mani Angkor complex, it offers the tranquillity of a secluded retreat, yet it’s just a short walk from the bustling heart of Siem Reap. The river is across the road, the Made in Cambodia Market is on the opposing corner, it’s less than one kilometre to Pub Street, and a whole assortment of dining, spa and entertainment options are between there and the hotel. If you ask for the GM’s list of recommendations, you’ll have the insider’s advantage. He has never led us astray from Phare Circus to Barcode, Sokkhak River Lounge to Apopo demining rats.
This convenient juxtaposition allows us to have it all—sightseeing in the temples of Angkor, shopping for locally made items, dining, pampering, and entertainment at our doorstep, but complete seclusion from the outside world when we close the villa door.
The Shinta Mani Foundation
We sure do appreciate living this pampered life, but luxury transcends the physical at the Bensley Collection Pool Villas.
