Jamie Low -Co-founder of Lyla Beauty Lounge

In this interview, Jamie Low -Co-founder of LYLA Beauty Lounge, shares some insight into behind-the-scenes operations.

What do you do?

I am one of the founders of LYLA Beauty Lounge in Kuala Lumpur. I’m a certified eyelash extension specialist with eight years of experience in the industry, dedicated to enhancing my clients’ natural beauty.

How did you get into the industry?

It has brought me satisfaction to help others look beautiful since I was a child. My journey into the eyelash extension industry was a serendipitous blend of passion and opportunity. I have always been interested in beauty and aesthetics, and the allure of enhancing natural features captivated me. During my exploration of various beauty techniques, I discovered the artistry of eyelash extensions.

Share with us a story from behind the scenes.

Reflecting on our journey from a small studio to a larger space in Kuala Lumpur, one particular behind-the-scenes story stands out—a testament to our team’s dedication and the support of our wonderful clients.

Our cozy studio was nestled in a quaint part of the city in the early days. As demand for our services grew, it became evident that we needed more space to accommodate our expanding clientele. The decision to move to a more prominent location in the bustling heart of Kuala Lumpur was both exciting and nerve-wracking.

The behind-the-scenes effort was nothing short of a coordinated dance during the transition. From carefully packing and transporting our equipment to maintaining seamless communication with our clients about the move, every detail was meticulously planned. Our team worked tirelessly to set up the new space, ensuring it retained the warmth and personalised touch that our clients loved.

One of the most heartwarming moments occurred on the first day in our new studio. Clients who had been with us from the start showed up with flowers, cards, and messages of encouragement. It was a beautiful affirmation of our relationships and the sense of community that had grown around our brand.

As the founder, witnessing the transformation from a small studio to a larger, more modern space was a proud and emotional moment. The journey was a collaborative effort—our team’s hard work, our clients’ loyalty, and the positive energy that had propelled us forward.

What’s a food memory from Jamie Low’s childhood or travels that stands out?

One of my childhood’s most cherished food memories is the aroma of my grandmother’s kitchen during Sunday dinners. She would spend hours preparing a traditional family recipe for lasagna, layering rich meat sauce, creamy béchamel, and perfectly cooked pasta. The entire house would be filled with the comforting scent of garlic and herbs. Sitting around the table with my extended family, sharing laughter and stories while savouring each delicious bite of that homemade lasagna, created a warm and unforgettable food memory.

What’s the best/worst part of your job?

The best part of my job is the opportunity to bring joy and confidence to my clients through eyelash extensions. Witnessing the transformation and the smiles on their faces when they see the final result is incredibly rewarding. I love the artistry of creating unique lash designs that enhance their natural beauty and boost their self-esteem. Building relationships with my clients and participating in their beauty journey is genuinely fulfilling.

On the flip side, the most challenging aspect would be managing the intricate details and precision required for each eyelash extension application. It demands a high concentration level and attention to detail, which can be mentally and physically taxing. Additionally, staying updated with the latest trends and continuously improving my skills to meet client expectations can be demanding. However, the learning process is also a valuable part of the job, and overcoming these challenges contributes to professional growth and expertise in the field.

What’s one of the craziest things you’ve seen behind the scenes?

I recall the craziest and most hectic period in the week leading up to Chinese New Year, during which I remained at the company for seven consecutive days. From 7 in the morning until 2 in the morning each day, I dedicated myself to completing eyelash extensions for 13 clients daily.

Jamie Low’s perfect day off would be…

spending time with my family, catching up with friends and knowing they are doing well.

A day in the life of Jamie Low is …

a blend of creativity, precision, and client-focused interactions. Starting the morning with meticulous preparation, I ensure my workspace is clean, organised, and ready for the day ahead. The morning often kicks off with client consultations, where I engage with clients to understand their preferences, discuss styles, and address any questions or concerns they may have.

The core of my day revolves around the artistry of applying eyelash extensions. With a keen eye for detail, I customise lash sets to enhance each client’s unique features. From classic to voluminous styles, I aim to create looks that meet and exceed their expectations. I prioritise client comfort throughout the day, making the experience as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.

During breaks, I recharge to maintain focus and energy for the afternoon appointments. In addition to client care, a portion of my day is dedicated to business operations. This includes managing bookings, responding to emails, and ensuring the smooth functioning of the studio.

Continued professional development is crucial in the ever-evolving beauty industry. I allocate time to stay informed about the latest trends, techniques, and products, keeping my skills sharp and my services up-to-date.

I maintain the same precision and dedication as the day progresses into evening appointments. Closing the day involves cleaning and organising my tools and workspace, reflecting on the day’s work, and identifying areas for improvement.

Additionally, I dedicate time to personal growth, whether through additional training or self-care. The life of an eyelash extension stylist is a dynamic balance of artistry, client care, and business acumen. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities for creativity, making the profession both rewarding and fulfilling.

What does Jamie Low do for fun?

I have a passion for outdoor activities. Hiking and exploring nature trails provide a refreshing escape from daily routines. The combination of fresh air, scenic views, and physical activity is invigorating and helps me maintain a healthy balance in life.

What would you like guests to know about the services provided at Lyla Beauty Lounge?

When you put on eyelash extensions and beautifully micro-bladed eyebrows, you still look stunning even when you dive into the water.

How have you grown in your profession? What are your key learnings from your start in the industry until now? Any misconceptions?

Key Learnings:

Client-Centric Approach: I’ve learned the importance of a client-centric approach. Understanding their unique needs, actively listening to their preferences during consultations, and incorporating feedback into my work has been crucial. Building strong relationships with clients fosters trust and contributes to a positive and satisfying experience for both parties.

Efficient Time Management: Managing time effectively is a skill that has evolved over time. Balancing client appointments, administrative tasks, and personal development requires strategic planning. This has improved the flow of my workday and contributed to a more organised and successful business operation.

Adaptability to Industry Trends: The beauty industry is dynamic, with trends constantly evolving. Keeping abreast of the latest styles, techniques, and products has become a priority. This adaptability ensures that my services remain relevant and appealing to clients seeking the latest eyelash extensions.

Misconceptions:

Early in my career, I may have harboured misconceptions about the industry’s simplicity, believing that success primarily hinged on technical proficiency alone. However, I’ve realised that success in the eyelash extension profession is multifaceted. It requires artistic skill, effective business management, marketing, and a deep understanding of client expectations. Recognising and overcoming this misconception has been instrumental in shaping a more holistic and sustainable approach to my career.

What do you want people to know about being a founder of LYLA Beauty Lounge?

Being an eyelash extension founder is not just about creating beautiful lash designs; it’s about building and sustaining a business that prioritises client satisfaction, innovation, and professionalism. One aspect I’d like people to understand is the intricate balance required between the artistry of eyelash extensions and the responsibilities of entrepreneurship. While the journey of being a founder presents challenges, the rewards are equally fulfilling. Witnessing the growth of the business, the satisfaction of happy clients, and the ability to contribute to the confidence and beauty of others make the challenges worthwhile.

What practices do you currently implement or hope to implement to work towards social responsibility and sustainability in the future?

As a business owner in the eyelash extension industry, I recognise the importance of social responsibility and sustainability. Currently, I am implementing several practices to contribute to these values, and I have plans for further initiatives.

Current Practices:

–             Ethical Sourcing: I prioritise using ethically sourced and cruelty-free lash products. This includes lash extensions, adhesives, and other materials. I ensure that the brands and suppliers I collaborate with are committed to responsible and ethical practices.

–             Waste Reduction: To minimise waste, I implement practices such as using eco-friendly packaging materials and encouraging clients to return for refills rather than opting for entirely new sets of eyelash extensions. Additionally, I explore recycling options for disposable tools and materials wherever possible.

–             Energy Efficiency: I’ve adopted energy-efficient practices in my studio, such as LED lighting and energy-saving appliances. This reduces my environmental footprint and contributes to cost savings that can be redirected towards sustainable initiatives.

What can guests look forward to in the upcoming months?

We’ll introduce exclusive promotions and packages to express our gratitude for your continued support. These will not only make our services more accessible but also allow you to indulge in a combination of treatments tailored to enhance your beauty and relaxation.
