Bruce Dukes has been making wines for the biggies in Margaret River for over thirty years. However, with Domaine Naturaliste, he steps out with his own vineyards and label, and we’re excited to drop in for a taste.

In a region celebrated for its ironstone gravel soils, maritime influence, and biodiverse environment, Domaine Naturaliste is an interplay between science and art in winemaking. In his label, Bruce Dukes tells a narrative of the terroir—balanced, complex, and a combination of tradition and innovation.

Bruce Dukes’ path to creating Domaine Naturaliste began with an academic background in Agricultural Science from the University of Western Australia and a master’s degree in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of California, Davis. His formative years include stints at prestigious establishments such as Francis Ford Coppola’s Niebaum-Coppola winery in California and Pierro Winery in Margaret River. These experiences have positioned him as a respected authority in understanding fruit selection and soil dynamics. Bruce’s philosophy—that the best wine is created from the ground up—reflects his passion for sustainable agricultural practices and commitment to showcasing the intrinsic qualities of the local terroir.

Domaine Naturaliste is located on the famed Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge in Wilyabrup. Ironstone gravel soils offer ideal drainage and promote healthy vine growth. The coastal proximity—just seven kilometres from the ocean—creates a microclimate, lending a gentle maritime influence, balancing warm days and cool nights. This contributes to the development of grapes with optimal phenolic ripeness and subtle complexities that are beautifully expressed with Bruce’s skill and knowledge.

Domaine Naturaliste’s commitment to quality has not gone unnoticed among critics. The Halliday Wine Companion awarded the estate Best Value Winery in Australia in 2020, and the Decanter World Wine Awards gave the 2020 Rebus Cabernet Sauvignon a “Best in Show” medal after rigorous judging of over 18,000 wines.

Domaine Naturaliste’s cellar door in Wilyabrup offers tastings complemented by scenic views. Guests can taste the Discovery Series (AUD 10) at the bar or have a premium seated tasting (AUD 25) at tables overlooking the vineyards. The price of the tasting is redeemed with any bottle purchase. Charcuterie and Cheese Boards (AUD 42) are great partners for those who want an unhurried session.

Discovery Series

The Discovery Series, the entry-level range, is an excellent introduction to the possibilities of Margaret River wine. These wines are often typical expressions of the regional varietals, offering a nuanced balance easily enjoyed by newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts alike.

Direction Series

For those with a refined palate, the Direction Series takes the journey further. Matured in French oak, this range involves precise selection and blending techniques, ensuring each wine embodies the classical markers of Margaret River varietals but also pushes its boundaries to deliver an intense, refined complexity.

Flagship Series

Representing the pinnacle of Bruce Dukes’ winemaking philosophy, the Flagship Series is the ultimate expression of the iconic Margaret River varietals. These wines are crafted with a level of passion and scientific rigour that transforms them into ambassadors of the region—a labour of love and something you might consider holding onto.

We take up the seated premium tasting with a charcuterie and cheese board, soaking up the slow, intentional Margaret River lifestyle.

Sauvage 2023 Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc (AUD 39)

This wine lives up to its “wild ferment” moniker, offering a burst of lychee and lemon zest that dances across the nose. Barrel fermentation in French oak and extended lees contact (fumé blanc style) impart a creamy texture that beautifully balances its bright, crisp acidity, making it both refreshing and complex.

Floris 2022 Margaret River Chardonnay (AUD 39)

Reflecting its floral namesake, Floris has delicate aromas of white grapefruit and nectarine intertwined with ethereal white jasmine and other floral notes. A generous touch of oak adds depth and nuance to its fruit-forward, vibrant character, capturing a modern yet elegant spirit that is synonymous with Margaret River’s cool-climate charm.

Artus 2022 Chardonnay Margaret River (AUD 62)

Widely recognised as the estate’s signature expression, Artus delivers a textured palate where butterscotch and creamy butter meld with toasted French oak nuances. Described by the cellar manager as “home,” this wine evokes comfort and refinement simultaneously, encapsulating the classic, rich style of Margaret River Chardonnay with every sip.

Rachis 2023 Margaret River Syrah (AUD 39)

Emphasising the term “rachis” (or stalk), this Syrah is crafted with the inclusion of whole-bunch press elements, which lend a distinctive, earthy undercurrent without veering into bitterness. The wine unfolds with enticing spice and dark berry aromas, all supported by a supple structure and a whisper of oak—making it both intriguing in youth and elegantly balanced.

Rebus 2023 Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon (AUD 39)

A tribute to regional heritage, Rebus unfolds with red fruits—glazed cherries, red currants, and hints of plum skin—bolstered by layers of cocoa, licorice, and graphite. Its tannic framework and persistent mineral finish offer both immediate appeal and promising evolution with further bottle age.

Morus 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River (AUD 95)

Named for the mulberry—the signature character of this grape—Morus layers notes of mulberry, violets, and cassis with a subtle graphite edge. Its velvety tannins and well-integrated oak create a wine of both power and grace, destined to appeal to the most discerning collectors.
