True perfection is elusive. All the more so while you’re on holiday. Maybe the restaurants are too crowded, or unwanted noise interrupts a good night’s sleep. Maybe the showers aren’t hot enough, or the gym closes early. Perhaps the service isn’t too friendly, or your arrangements for an airport transfer get lost in the fray. Or maybe, just maybe, the stars align, and you book a stay at the InterContinental Phuket Resort.

Wellness Retreat Phuket – InterContinental Phuket Resort

We enter the stunning open-air lobby with high ceilings, cool marble floors and fresh orchids aplenty. The luminous Sawan Pavilion (home to Michelin Guide hom restaurant) winks at us between the trees. As we sip our welcome drinks and enjoy our cool towels, the concierge hands us a personalised welcome letter and a map of the resort. The complimentary buggy service glides in and smoothly escorts us to our villa. We take in the meticulously maintained gardens and lushly inviting pools. Notes of fresh jasmine and frangipani linger all around. The double doors of our private pool villa open, and we’re at a true loss for words. We’re on a journey to nurture our wellness at the InterContinental Phuket Resort, and the destination is paradise.

Wellness Retreat Thailand – Location

The InterContinental Phuket Resort is steps away from the exclusive Kamala Beach on the western side of Phuket. It’s a smooth 45-minute ride from the airport and 40 minutes away from Phuket Old Town. The resort is divided into the Kamala Mountain Wing, with picturesque views of the surrounding tree-filled tropical hills, and the Club InterContinental Beach Wing, adjacent to the gentle waters of Kamala Bay.

Design

The resort’s design draws inspiration from the epic Thai lyrical work Traibhumikata. Its layout echoes the three realms of existence from Buddhist cosmology: the heavenly realm, the human realm, and the underwater realm. A snake-shaped pool presides over the resort’s beach wing – a nod to the serpentine Naga, king of the underwater realm. At the epicentre, the lobby represents Phasuta, the human realm. Further inward, bountiful trees, tranquil ponds, and a mirrored walkway lead to the alluring Sawan Pavilion, denoting a heavenly realm. Rising out of these ponds are Himmaphan Mudcha fish statues designed by Prof. Prayad Pongdam, Thai National Artist, representing the many fantastical creatures that make their home in the mythical Himmapan forest.

Rooms

The resort offers everything from classic rooms overlooking the mountains or pool to those with direct access to a semi-private plunge pool. For added indulgence, select pool- or ocean-view rooms come with access to the Club InterContinental Lounge. Lagoon Villas tempt with water at your doorstep, while beachside suites place Kamala’s golden sands just steps away. For the ultimate in privacy and space, one-, two-, and three-bedroom private pool villas come with exclusive Club Lounge privileges and all the comforts of a secluded retreat.

Two-bedroom Private Pool Villa

Our two-bedroom private pool villa is nothing short of astounding. It spans 260 square metres of indoor and outdoor space, as well as 50 square metres of a private pool. There’s a separate bedroom on each floor, each with its own freestanding bathtub (oh, that tub!). The bathrooms are luxuriously outfitted in white marble and stocked with high-end Byredo toiletries. Our bedrooms have a full mini bar, coffee and tea station, mini fridge, a TV with full streaming services, sitting areas for reading, and feather-soft bed linens with pillows of varying softness and plumpness. Lights and aircon are clearly marked and responsive to all preferences, while full blackout curtains ensure only the sweetest uninterrupted dreams.

With access to freestanding bathtubs and a private pool, it’s a mystery how we didn’t spend our entire visit splashing around at our villa. The bathtubs have a nice depth and width, with a small wooden rack stretched across to put the essentials (wine, snacks, book and device). In addition to its heavenly fragrance, the body wash foams nicely and serves as a lovely makeshift bubble bath.

The downstairs bedroom opens directly onto the pool through sliding doors—Mon insists there’s no better motivation to rise than glimpsing that inviting blue from bed. No moaning or groaning here; a morning dip sets the tone with beauty and buoyancy. The private terrace is generously sized and lushly bordered with tropical trees and potted plants. We have the choice to recline on sun loungers or stay cool on the couches, lulled by the soft whir of ceiling fans. The private pool is an inviting shade of turquoise, and it takes a lot of restraint to document the villa’s full roster of facilities before succumbing to a refreshing plunge.

Wellness Retreat Thailand – Food & Drink

Jaras

No sooner have we checked in than Mon insists our first stop must be Jaras—to pay homage, she says, to the legendary Gaeng Pae (THB 1,075), the restaurant’s goat massaman curry. The dish had reached near-mythical status before we even set foot in the hotel, and it doesn’t disappoint. Rich and deeply aromatic, the southern-style massaman features slow-cooked Bang Jo goat, wild potatoes from Songkhla, fresh coconut milk, tamarind, and a brew of Tanburi sugar palm. If you eat just one thing at Jaras, make it this.

We also sample the Phuket Local Launaea with Oyster Sauce (THB 490), a dish of garlicky greens and punchy chilli that showcases the rare Pak Lin Harn (Phuket local launaea), paired with crispy invasive wildflower (Dok Mae) from Songkhla. Restaurant manager Jessica tells us the launaea plant—once common along Phuket’s coastline—is now served in only four restaurants, having dwindled due to over-harvesting.

Next, we nibble on Gai Yang Kamin (THB 400), skewers of organic Tankhun chicken lifted with a zingy turmeric marinade, fresh coriander, and a gel made from the invasive Alpinia conchigera (Kha Ling). Five types of rice are offered—a detail we’re perhaps unreasonably excited about. We choose Tubtim Choompae from Sakhon Nakhon, known for its stickiness and antioxidant-rich red seed coat, and berry rice from Pattalung, a cross between Hom Nil jasmine and Khao Khao Dok Mali varieties, also called riceberry.

Every dish at Jaras is outstanding—thoughtfully conceived, beautifully plated, and brimming with flavour. We leave already looking forward to the nine-course tasting menu the next evening. Their commitment to zero-waste cooking and sustainable gastronomy isn’t just admirable—it’s seamlessly woven into every part of the dining experience.

hom

During our stay, we’re also fortunate to sample hom restaurant’s fantastic ten-course tasting menu in the beautiful Sawan Pavilion. With a focus on deliberate fermentation and incorporation of local ingredients, hom’s commitment to their craft is second to none.

Extensive Dining Options

InterContinental Phuket Resort’s collection of venues span elegant, earthy, and effortlessly beachy. While our tummies reach capacity during our stay, there are even more reasons to return—with more restaurants tempting us with their own distinct personalities and flavours. Tengoku brings the drama with refined teppanyaki, where chefs work their magic on the grill with precision and flair. Pinto, inspired by Old Town Phuket, celebrates Thai home cooking and international flavours.

For something a little stronger, 333 at the Beach shakes up sunset cocktails, premium wines, and craft beers just steps from the sand. Pine Beach Bar and the Pine Rooftop Bar are go-to spots for lazy lunches, golden hour drinks, and long, sea-view evenings. And when the mood calls for clotted cream and a touch of elegance, Devas Lounge serves a graceful high tea that looks worth lingering over.

Breakfast

If you book a standard room with breakfast included, you may enjoy the comprehensive breakfast buffet at Pinto restaurant. If you’re in a room with Club InterContinental Lounge access, you can take your pick between the expansive buffet or the calmer and more refined setting of the Club InterContinental Lounge. To keep our mornings quiet, we opt for the latter.

Club InterContinental Lounge

While browsing the breakfast menu, we’re impressed by its sheer range. There are Western Specials, such as cured salmon bagels and banana pancakes, for those craving comfort, alongside Heritage Favourites like bak kut teh (pork stew) and kuay teow nam sai (clear broth rice noodles) for a more local morning ritual.

Things take a refined turn with Plant-Based Options like cauliflower scramble and overnight oats, while Phuket Street Food classics—think Khao Pad Goong (prawn fried rice)—add a splash of wok-fired nostalgia. The menu also highlights Hyper Local dishes such as kanom jeen nam ya poo (rice noodles with crab curry) and thoughtful Zero-Waste creations like Phuket-style khao tom pla (Andaman sea bass congee), ensuring even our consciences eat well.

Of course, the usual brunch suspects are all present and accounted for—fresh pastries, eggs any way you like, and the essential sides (yes, we see you, hash browns). It’s hard to choose, but we’re in excellent hands with our warm and wonderfully attentive server, Best—aptly named, we might add.

All à la carte dishes can be paired with the buffet, which features fresh fruit, cold cuts, yoghurt and a bountiful salad bar. There are fresh pastries and bread to slice and toast to your carb-loving heart’s content, and even a protein shake station for those keen to hit their macros before noon.

The Club InterContinental Lounge serves more than just an exceptional breakfast. From 2 to 4 p.m., afternoon tea invites us to slow down. We savour delicate moments over warm raisin scones slathered with jam and butter, Kratien Farm oyster mushroom sandwiches, and smoky hot mackerel bites—all perfectly paired with a comforting cup of tea or coffee. There are several sweets, too, but we try to be sensible given that a nine-course menu at Jaras awaits us this evening.

As golden hour approaches, we return for Cocktail Hour to raise a glass to the spectacular sunsets. The Mekhong Thai Sabai—a blend of Mekhong Thai whiskey, Thai basil, lime and apple juices, simple syrup, and soda—is refreshingly balanced. Then there’s the Tropical Bliss 2.0, a mix of Bacardi white rum, Giffard Banane liqueur, homemade Phuket pineapple basil cordial, lime juice, and butterscotch syrup—sumptuously syrupy and creamy, with just the right twist. A diverse selection of beers, wines—sparkling, red and white—spirits, and zero-proof cocktails promises plenty of future tasting adventures.

The canapés are equally tempting: crispy Gai Jor chicken dumplings with chilli gel, smoked olives dusted with lemon zest (genius!), grilled oyster mushrooms topped with tomato salsa on rice crackers, and larb polomai—mixed fruit salad served in a charming fruit cup. While we’re luxuriating in table service on recliners overlooking the sea, there’s also a light buffet inside with cheese, crackers and more to fill plates.

Breakfast, afternoon tea, canapés, cocktails—and an all-day selection of non-alcoholic beverages—already make the Club InterContinental Lounge a tempting retreat. But there’s more: a private pool overlooking the beach and a serene garden courtyard, complete with fresh towels and shower facilities. For those who prefer a quieter pace, it’s the perfect hideaway to while away the day in peace.

Facilities & Activities

InterContinental Phuket Resort impresses with a wealth of facilities. Five outdoor pools beckon daily from dawn to dusk, including the family-friendly Lagoon Pool with its dedicated kids’ area, and the Serene Pool, which offers the luxury of both hot and cold water zones. (And, I did mention we have our own private pool in our villa, didn’t I?)

We certainly appreciate the state-of-the-art Fitness Centre open 24 hours, suiting both early risers and night owls. Windows frame verdant hills as a stunning backdrop while we work out. Several cardio machines, free weights, strength machines, mats and balls are sufficient for maintaining fitness. Above the main gym, a separate studio hosts kickboxing, yoga, and dance sessions, adding variety to our routine. Fresh towels and cold water are thoughtfully provided.

Especially welcome during the rainy season, the resort offers a vibrant selection of indoor activities to keep spirits high. From the energetic rhythm of Aero Boxing Dance and Circuit Training to the creative calm of Batik Handkerchief Painting and Thai dessert cooking classes, there’s something to spark curiosity and suit every mood.

Families will appreciate Planet Trekkers, the kids’ club designed for children aged 4 to 12, where little ones can enjoy a variety of engaging activities. For those seeking a bit of adventure, the on-site tennis courts provide a sporty challenge, while the Kamala Bike Tour invites guests to discover the local area in a fun and active way.

Beyond the organised activities, the resort’s impeccably maintained grounds invite leisurely exploration. Sun-dappled paths wind through whispering trees, creating a setting perfect for a mindful stroll or simply getting wonderfully lost in nature’s calm.
