Miss Ellie Tea House, a favorite stop for moist desserts, homemade scones, and delicate pastries, has a new menu featuring a range of healthy and hearty dishes served all day.
As the head chef, one of Justin’s primary goals is to create flavorful, balanced dishes made with fresh in-house ingredients. Their expanded menu reflects this with new items such as: roast mushroom soup, tea-smoked salmon salad, spaghetti pesto basilica, spaghetti METHtriciana, lamb shank pot pie, tikka shepherd’s pie, and of course their daily sampling of scones, cakes, pastries, and bread. No matter what you are in the mood for, Miss Ellie Tea House serves up a range of coffees, teas, hot chocolates (which are to die for, but more on this later), and fresh lemonade all to be paired with your favorite bites to eat.

For starters, Justin brought out the roast mushroom soup paired with the tea-smoked salmon salad. The button, shiitake, king oyster, and shimeji mushrooms are all roasted first before pureeing them. (Note: This is actually a dairy free soup. Cream is added for garnish. It can be requested without.) The hearty and flavorful soup is served with a homemade roll; excellent for dipping and wiping the bowl clean! Justin cures and smokes the fresh Norwegian salmon in house with cinnamon chips and tea leaves, and serves it on a bed of mixed greens drizzled with a homemade honey-miso and citrus dressing. The melt in your mouth salmon is a perfect match for the sweet dressing.

If meat pies are your thing, then you won’t be disappointed with the lamb shank pot pie or the tikka shepherd’s pie, my personal favorite! The moist, melt in your mouth lamb is – you guessed it – braised for more than 6 hours in house and then topped with a parsley, butter shortcrust. The succulent chicken tikka masala is enriched with butter, thickened with ground cashews, and topped with chunky, mustard-dotted mashed potatoes. It is a no wonder that this ‘Western meets local’ dish was not only my favorite, but chef Justin’s favorite too! Both pies come with a side salad tossed in their blood orange and olive oil house dressing. The hearty pies and the fresh salad make for a great lunch or dinner option!

Justin spoiled us after the meal with some of his favorite pastries, scones, cold brew coffee, and hot chocolate to die for! By using a Madagascar dark chocolate that is a lighter roast, Miss Ellie does not have to add any sugar or starch to sweeten this drinkable dessert. Heaven in a mug, the chocolate can be served regular or ‘pretty’- topped with toasted hazelnut, dark chocolate shavings, and more cream! After watching Caning’s reaction, I think this was his favorite part of our whole experience.

Another new pastry, the blueberry friand, was fresh, moist, and had a warm gooey blueberry center. This bite size (well, maybe a couple bites) sweet treat could be paired with any coffee or tea in the afternoon, eaten as dessert, or even as a great breakfast option, can be made gluten free, as can many of Miss Ellie’s other desserts.
OMG! – This Pink Guava Cheese is used in the Baked Ricotta Cheesecake – not available the day we visited, but if the guava jam is anything to go by… we’re coming back just for this! |
From the minute we walked in to the moment we left, Justin and Nancy made us feel like part of the family with their personal touches and warm smiles. They are clearly passionate about Miss Ellie Tea House, which only adds to the enchanted feeling you have when going there. This is truly a hidden gem in Melawati that is a MUST visit!
Reasons to visit: unique ambience found nowhere else in KL; best scones in the city; awesome desserts with some gluten-free varieties too; good value lunch items; one of the friendliest cafes we’ve visited in Kuala Lumpur.
