Acme
Bar and Coffee (ABC) Spring and Valentine’s Menu, 2013

Seasonal menus are all the fashion at the moment
and with good reason. Utilizing produce that is in its prime ensures optimum
taste and an evolving menu keeps diners interested. With spring soon upon us,
Acme Bar and Coffee makes use of fresh vegetables, quality cuts of meat and
seafood and a jolly sprinkling of bright blossoms to awaken our palates and
rejuvenate our spirits.

Rotating wine specials – this Spanish white organic wine is one of my favourites – a brightly floral aroma and smooth surface makes it an easy drinking wine alone or with food.

Tangy, citrusy, light and fresh, the Spring 2013
menu at Acme Bar and Coffee lines up fruits, flowers, sprouts and a lawn of
green creating an experience that breathes fresh air, blue skies and lightness
in being that often accompany the onset of the vernal season.

From February 1, expect a flourishing garden of
colours and floral scents with an emphasis on seafood, poultry, crisp
vegetables and a medley of grains and legumes. The Strawberry, Pomelo &
Rocket Salad with edible flowers & citrus balsamic vinaigrette is a vibrant
start. Keeping the tone light the B&W Sesame Tuna Medallion Salad atop
Romaine lettuce, hard-boiled organic eggs & creamy garlic and anchovy aioli
dressing, makes a formidable follow up. For something with a bit more
carbohydrate and bursting with flavour, you can’t go past the Pulled Duck Open-Faced
Sandwich with orange BBQ sauce & Parmesan fries. Feeling a little more like
a sturdy main meal for dinner is the Roasted Lemon Spring Chicken with saffron
wheatberry, avocado chunks, cherry tomato & vegetables. The wonderfully
rich sauce and springy grains provide a delicious base for the tender fowl.

With the month of February also comes the
celebration of love and friendship surrounding Valentine’s Day. Acme Bar and
Grill are well prepared and show their passion for fostering relationships
through wholesome food with their agreeable bill of fare. For starters, a
Medley of Three Oysters blew us away with its uniqueness and ability to rouse
desire for more. The first oyster to be eaten must be the one topped with the
fresh passionfruit sorbet – serving both as a palate cleanser and amuser of
appetites this twist on the mollusk had us wowed at the onset. A shooter filled
with a succulent bivalve and cauliflower veloute and another oyster, gratin
with herb crusted gremolata, balanced the trio.

Classic Handmade Lamb Ravioli served on a bed of
three beans, pimento sauce and baby carrots, is the first choice for the main
course. Three super sized pillows of pasta are loaded with tender shredded beef
and the slightly firm legume bedding furnishes a masterly contrast in textures.
The oysters were a hard cast to follow, but this dish strongly held its own on
the stage putting up a mighty fight not to be outdone by the seafood option.
The Blowtorched Tiger Prawns with citrus fruits, basil and steamed zucchini
stuffed with scallop mousse brought the competition to a peak and makes the
decision obvious of what to order – one of each.

Dessert must be cocoa inspired and the Melting
Chocolate Heart did not disappoint. We knew it would be more than good when our
spoons first breached the dark chocolate crumble meeting a slight resistance
and then, with further pressure, the almond praline yielded and the cake was
severed. A tube of brown chocolate encases a vanilla rose sauce and the first
heart of the evening subtly appears decorating the plate with a white and pink
badge.

  1. Quite a good fare!

Somehow I sort am getting cheesed off at this place for its service and especially terribly inconsistent coffees from my last few visits in December and January:( The most recent was having to wait 30 minutes for a cup of flat white!
