The Majestic Hotel
Kuala Lumpur by YTL, Malaysia

If you like to be made a fuss of, The Majestic Hotel Kuala
Lumpur is the place for you. From the moment we pulled up to the lobby, to the
minute we climbed in our car and waved goodbye, staff made us feel like
royalty, attending to our every desire, even predicting, before we knew
ourselves, what we might yearn for. Rooms smelling of orchids, check-in in the
comfort of our own suite, and an entourage of staff welcomed us. Everything at
this hotel is done with grand style.
While The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, rising as a resplendent
portrait of prestige from the culture-laden streets of old KL, maintains the
majesty of years long gone, it certainly isn’t stuck in the past. From the
digitalized check in where I signed my autograph on a screen, to the waterproof
remote control in the bathtub facing its own flat screen TV, to i-Pad menus,
the conveniences of the present are subtly integrated into the stateliness of
the yesteryears.

A complimentary shuttle bus gives easy access to the city
centre and KL Sentral train station. There are, however a host of nearby areas
of interest within easy reach of the hotel. The National Museum is a 20 minute
stroll from the hotel; the gorgeous exteriors of the Malayan Railway Station
and KTM Headquarters can be viewed from site; the modernist interpretation of
the National Mosque, Masjid Negara, is too mere minutes away and; enclosed in
Lake Gardens, less than a 10 minute drive away, are the National Planetarium,
National Monument, Orchid and Hibiscus Gardens, Deer Park, Bird Park, Islamic
Arts Museum and Butterfly Park. For culture and food, The Majestic Hotel Kuala
Lumpur is mid point between Little India and Chinatown where a multitude of
inexpensive local dishes, shops and temples can be explored.
Rooms are testament to the care that has been taken to
preserve the elegance of colonial times. In the Majestic Wing, choose from 47
old style suites, each containing their own claw foot bathtub and a little more
privacy in terms of separate bathroom, bedroom and living area.  The new Tower Wing has a choice of 243
classically designed, but slightly more contemporary, rooms ranging from a
standard room to various classifications of suites. An open concept is created
with glass walls dividing the bathroom and bedroom areas and, the modern
influence is seen in the form of flat screen TVs fitted to the panels in front
of every bathtub.

Screening Room –
Black and White Films
Facilities include a fully equipped gymnasium, swimming
pool, incredible spa by Spa Village, wireless Internet, private drawing room, an orchid room and The
Smokehouse. The Smokehouse is, as its name proposes, the only place in the
hotel where you can smoke. It’s also an area where a lot of fun is at your
fingertips. Behind closed doors, off the main bar and lounge area, you can sneak
away into the cigar room, the card room or a private dining room with your own
chef. Downstairs you’ll be transported to days of old in the grooming room, the
gentlemen’s only barber, Truefitt and Hill, followed by black and white movies
contemplated in maroon leather armchairs in the screening lounge. Of special
note too is the Orchid Room, a greenhouse filled with beautiful blossoms. It’s
a delightful location to cleanse your lungs of polluted city air and rethink
the whole experience of breathing. Upon request, afternoon tea can be set up
inside, or it too makes an unforgettably romantic place for a proposal.

Gymnasium
Dining basically comes in two menus – one at the buffet
style Contango and, the other in the a la carte Colonial Café, The Bar and The Tea Lounge. Contango has one of the best value free flow wine and beer
buffets in the city. For an additional RM30++ to the dinner menu, guests can
delight in endless self-service wine and beer. With the Enomatic wine
dispensing machine, diners are not limited to one red and one white which is a
common feature of many free flows, but have a choice of six whites and six reds
and a range of serving sizes too. For those who want to taste everything you
can select the ‘sample’ size pour which gives enough for a tasting of each. The
name Contango too is an interesting one – derived from the oil and gas industry
and based around the supply and demand concept, the fuller the restaurant the
higher the price. Not yet implemented, but worth knowing to arrive early for when
it is.

Afternoon Tea, tinkled with tunes of a live pianist and set in the
lush colonial atmosphere of The Tea Lounge, is an experience worth booking. A
classic cocktail at The Bar dressed with a story woven by the barman, followed with
colonial cuisine in the Colonial Café are memorable indulgences.

  1. The Raffles or the E & O of KL, very nice!

  2. Ooo, I'd like to drop by that gentleman's barber someday. It might be an interesting experience (though I don't think I'd risk one of those knife's-edge, throat-grazing shaves that I've seen in old movies, heheh) 😀

  3. What a place! Disappear into the colonial charm of the empire…

  4. awesome review, yum! 🙂

  5. OMG, the pool is gorgeous! I wanna take a dip in there now!!

  6. Looks like a really gorgeous hotel! Need to go stay there this year 😉

  7. I've read a lot about the orchid rooms that only does advance booking if you want to dine there!
