Dimple J Devnani, Founder – The Dessert Bar KL

Dimple J Devnani

In this interview, home baker and found of The Dessert Bar KL, Dimple J. Devnani, shares her passion for baking.

What do you do and how did you get into the industry?
I am a homemaker with a passion for creating delectable desserts. This is a passion I’ve had ever since I was young. Growing up in the Philippines, I found amazing desserts on every corner. I was inspired to pursue this professionally. I had the opportunity to learn and train under some of the best bakers and graduated with a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from one of the finest institutes in the Philippines. All of these experiences gave me the guidance to create these irresistible delights.

Share with us an interesting story from behind the scenes?
My husband has been very supportive behind the scenes. He encouraged me to pursue this passion, is my taste-tester and social media marketer! Desserts have always played a unique role for both of us. In fact, he proposed to me on a cake which we both devoured after I said yes!

Another story I cherish is when I had this business back home too. I made a speciality of mine called the mango delight, which I’ll be introducing soon on my page. A head chef tasted it while we were having a party at a well-known restaurant. He actually came up to me to compliment me on the fantastic dessert. It made my day.

What’s the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is definitely seeing the smile on people’s faces after they’ve tried a dessert I’ve made and they say that it’s the best they’ve had.

What’s your favourite food and beverage pairing?
Gnocchi and prosecco.

What’s one of the most outrageous things you’ve seen behind the scenes?
The most outrageous thing that ever happened to me was when an oven blew up in front of my face almost burning me. Back when I first started, I had a gas oven, so we had to light the bottom for it to heat up. Luckily I jumped back to avoid any cinders. But it definitely scared me into getting an electric oven after that!

The perfect day off would be…
… not lifting a finger to do anything. Just watching my favourite shows on Netflix and eating take out with my husband and daughter.

A day in the life of a Dimple J Devnani is…
waking up and checking the orders of the day, making sure there are enough supplies, and of course, the most exciting part – baking, which I tend to do best with music in my ears!

What do you do for fun?
I love dancing and choreographing Bollywood songs!

What’s your view on the home baking scene in KL?
With the current situation, there have been more home-based businesses that have been coming up. I believe that it’s a good thing. It’s exciting to see the varieties brought about by this.
