Priya Ravi – Scoops & Slices

Priya Ravi, home baker and founder of Scoops & Slices, shares some stories behind the scenes and how she grew a home baking business in Kuala Lumpur.

What do you do and how did you get into the industry?

I’m a homemaker turned home baker. When we moved to KL in 2012, we spent a lot of time exploring restaurants, different kinds of food, cuisines and desserts. For the foodies that we are, there was a wide choice of food, but our search was challenging as we always looked for the best. In my search for the best, I got curious and started recreating our favourite desserts at home, and with positive feedback from family and friends, I took a plunge into business.

What’s one of the craziest/ scariest things you’ve seen behind the scenes?

This is a story I will always remember. I woke up at 2.00 am and decided to take my fudgy brownie base from the pan and turn it on to the cake board and pour in the salted caramel. I flipped the pan and the brownie fell out of the board, on to the table and crumbled into pieces. It was a nightmare and I wasn’t sure if I would make the delivery the next day. I quickly whipped up another batch in the middle of the night and to my luck, I had just enough time for it to set as the client was only going to collect it later that evening.

What’s the best/ worst part of your job?

Thankfully, there’s never been a worst part so far. It’s been a pleasant journey right from start. The best part of this job is that I’m always learning and exploring, and it never stops.

A day in the life of a Priya Ravi is…

Literally living out of the kitchen. My kitchen is my home!

The perfect day off would be…

Stay out of my kitchen and eat out. As much as I love to cook and bake, I love those days when I don’t have to enter the kitchen. Order out and binge-watch my shows on Netflix.

What do you do for fun?

Trying out new recipes is my kind of fun! Something my family enjoys as well. Apart from that I really look forward to my yoga sessions during the week and family time on the weekend, which mostly revolves around our little poodle puppy.

What’s your favourite food and beverage pairing?

Dark chocolate, raisins and rum! And my favourite one is Whittaker’s and sadly, its only available at the duty-free in Malaysia. So when I run out of my stash it’s time to DIY. I soak some raisins in rum and have it with dark chocolate. That’s how crazy I am about it.

What’s something you’d like readers to know about Scoops and Slices by Priya?

My motto for Scoops & Slices is “Maintain quality and a taste profile that’s always top-notch”. Quality of ingredients used is never compromised over quantity. As this started purely from interest and passion and to cater to me and my family, I’ve kept it that way and therefore, I’ve micromanaged so far to ensure I deliver the best. What I love really love about my job as a home baker is connecting with each of my clients, to understand their needs and whip up desserts to cater to their tastes. It’s this labour of love that keeps me going.
