Favola Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur

Monica Tindall

As part of our “low-risk” staycay at a suite in Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur, we indulge in a special in-room delivery, courtesy of the hotel’s Italian restaurant, Favola. While this menu is not part of the room service compilation, staff are happy to arrange the menu for special occasions. Dining in the restaurant itself, however, rewards diners with some excellent promotions with discounts of up to 40% with various credit cards (CIMB – 40%, Maybank, UOB and Standard Chartered – 30%).

We’re lucky as tonight Chef Domenico Piras himself wheels in our meal. He would blush reading this though as he gives huge credit to his team, recognizing every player as contributing to the overall experience. In come two trolleys with a duo of tabletop food warmers that ensure each dish maintains its temperature until we’re ready to eat it.

We’ve ordered just as much as we would if sitting in the restaurant but lounging in our hotel room (with dishes ready-to-go in the warmer), we eat at a completely leisurely pace. We watch a little TV. Eat a bite of food. Drink a sip of wine. Chat about the week. Move into pyjamas. Everything is at our own pace and the food is superb. If you are nervous about dining out or want to celebrate a special occasion, this is something you might consider (subject to the busy-ness of the restaurant). The fabulous discounts, however, to not apply to an in-room experience.

Favola Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur – Bread

A bread course is part of dinner at Favola and if you order big like us, you might consider foregoing the carbs, or reducing your request by a dish. Olive, wholemeal and ciabatta buns, along with sticks of crostini are matched with a trio of dips – olive oil and balsamic, sun-dried tomato, and potato and truffle.

Antipasti

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the Baked Eggplant Parmigiana (RM 58) was a main course. We certainly aren’t complaining about the portions at Favola with the size of this hot antipasti plate. The usual slices of eggplant alternate with a light tomato sauce, mozzarella, Parmesan cheese and basil.

Soup

Thick and earthy, clearly a whole village of fungi lost their lives in the making of the Mixed Mushroom Soup (RM 52). Just-blended leaving tiny chunks of mushroom in the mouth, it’s a filling bowl. A swirl of truffle oil heightens the flavours of the forest.

Pizza

Pizza at Favola is thin-crust in style. Leopard skin char marks the sign of a quality dough and the Margherita (RM 47) demonstrates a tasty rendition of the classic. House-made tomato sauce, basil, mozzarella and olive oil are uncomplicated, celebrating fresh, premium ingredients.

Pasta

Classic Gragnano Orecchiette (RM 44) offers another meat-free choice with broccoli, aged pecorino and a cherry tomato basil sauce. The “little ear” pasta has an enticing bite to it and the concaves trap the sauce. A mild thread of chilli gives just a touch of heat. It’s another smashing pick.

Secondi

If you order one dish from Favola, make sure it’s the Sardinian Mixed Seafood ‘Pingiadedda’ and Fregula (RM 138). Haling from Chef Domenico’s hometown, and meaning ‘small pot,’ the recipe honours the best of Italian cooking. It’s abundant in the fruits of the sea; each cooked to maximize individual tenderness and natural flavour. The tiny balls of toasted pasta lightly bulk the dish and add a texture similar to that of pearl barley. Baby tomato sauce is rich in a way that only Italians know how. It’s intense and herbaceous but well-balanced, supporting the seafood rather than overpowering it.

The ‘Pingiadedda’ is a hard dish to follow. I’d be happy with it as starter, main and dessert but that would make for a shallow article wouldn’t it. It’s the scamorza cheese that seals the deal on the Chicken Breast (RM 78). A roll of poultry is based with layered potatoes and crowned with shredded zucchini and a sheet of scamorza. The cheese is excellently melted, providing a stretchy, golden top.

Dolci

Claiming to be the original recipe with over 60 years in the making, the 1956 Tiramisu (RM 48) has been passed down through a line of top chefs with Domenico’s mentor insisting on its transfer. Lady’s finger sponge are soft with both coffee and mascarpone and finished off with a sprinkling of cacao.

Three Italian Delights (RM 44) present a trio of favourites all in a single glass. Panna cotta is thick and dense basing the tower. Aerated and creamy, chocolate mousse provides a dark stripe between the white sandwich. Lastly, tiramisu sweeps the top in the lightest of the parade. It’s a wicked way to get the benefit of three desserts in one scoop.

  1. What a lovely place! The design looks so continental, absolutely perfect for an Italian place. Food looks great!

  2. A classic Italian decor with a modern flair! That Baked Eggplant Parmigiana is first on my list, followed by the Tiramisu, of course.

  3. Yummy delights ❤
