Happi Village Location

Set on 21 acres in Janda Baik, Happi Village is less than an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur. Although comfortably close to the city, it is far removed from the hustle and bustle of the big smoke. Spread over the side of a hill, the property is hidden amongst greenery with pretty mountain views rolling out in all directions.

At an elevation of 3000 feet above sea level, temperatures here are a few degrees cooler than the city. The pleasant climate combined with pristine air produced by the surrounding virgin rainforest makes for a very agreeable experience.

Sustainable Design in Janda Baik

The making of the Happi Village ensured minimal impact on the environment with no ground-levelling or tree chopping allowed. On top of eco-friendly building practices, an additional 600 trees were planted and mountain water directed to the site. Plastic water bottles are avoided; instead, guests are encouraged to refill glasses or their own reusable bottles from filtered water in the kitchen. Even the bath products are low impact on the earth and beneficial to the skin with their enzyme base.

Happi Village Rooms

Designed to work in harmony with nature, Happi Village’s sustainably outfitted rooms blend with their natural surrounds. Bare cement, clay bricks and wood finishings seamlessly morph the indoors with the out. Streams of natural light through abundant glass walls make this even more evident. Outdoor tubs further enhance the philosophy of tuning into the immediate environment, and a hot soak in the chilled night air while star-gazing is divine.

The no-frills furnishings are somehow luxurious in their simplicity. Spaces are uncluttered. Lines are clean. There are no unnecessary extras. In this crazy, busy world we find decadence in the proposal of a minimalist existence.

Organic Food Gardens

Woven throughout the rainforest setting of Happi Village are crops of organic vegetables and fruits, herbs and traditional medicines. The produce from these edible gardens are used in farm to plate experiences promising only the freshest food is served to the table.

Likewise, the pool avoids chemicals with its filling of sea salt and mountain water. The sodium serves to clear the pond and, combined with the fresh H2O, is a therapy for the skin rather than a toll on the body.

Things to Do

Celebrating Mother Earth, activities in and around Happi Village encourage guests to interact with the flora, fauna and land of the local eco-system. Various hiking trails are found in the area and the team run a hike to a nearby waterfall when the weather is good. About a 20-minute walk through the forest concludes with a pretty cascade; well worth the short trek. Figs, vegetables and tropical fruits grow in abundance in the area and guided visits can also be arranged.

We do both of the above but also relish time in the cool air on the covered deck reading, writing and chatting with friends. It would be a fabulous location for a yoga or wellness retreat. Also, with only 11 rooms, booking the whole property would be a wonderful idea for a group of friends or family celebrating something special, or just having a few days away together.

Happi Village Review

Happi Village is an excellent escape from the bustling city. Less than 60 minutes from Kuala Lumpur, it’s easily reached and makes a good session of nature therapy. With cool fresh air, an abundance of greenery, and the songs of the jungle at your doorstep, it’s both refreshing and peaceful.

Reasons to stay at Happi Village: a beautiful location surrounded by nature where the temperature is cooler, the air is cleaner, the food is fresher and life passes by a little more slowly.

  • Notes before you book: Happi Village is not for everyone. Wi-Fi is sketchy and there’s no TV. You are truly surrounded by nature with the magnificent sounds of the jungle the only distractions at night. Please remember this is if you come in a group – don’t disturb other guests with your noise at night. If you are a light sleeper, do bring earplugs and eye masks in case there are guests who stay up late (although management highly discourages this type of clientele, some sometimes slip through). If you are biophobic or not creative enough to find something to do without a strong Internet connection, this place is not for you. If you are refreshed by nature, are educated enough to occupy yourself without the Internet, and find joy in a slower pace of life, however, Happi Village is a must. Remember to bring a sweater as the evenings are lovely and cool.
