Looking My Best in 2021 with Kaiteki

Monica Tindall

Working from home this past year has meant that I haven’t been in any hurry to schedule regular beauty updates. The grey hairs are getting longer, there might be a little extra padding around my middle, and I certainly haven’t bothered too much with skin treatments. 2021 is a whole new year, however, and I’m determined to begin it on a high note. I make an appointment with Dr Jessie Lim at Kaiteki Medical Spa who has promised to help me start 2021 looking my best.

Consultation

Dr Jessie at Kaiteki never makes me feel lacking in any way. She notices what’s working well for my skin and prescribes procedures that can improve rather than change my appearance. It’s always a gentle conversation. At this age, I really don’t mind being told in black in white all the things that need fixing (in my mind), but a younger more delicate self would also be safe in Dr Jessie’s words.

If there’s anything I’ve learned from beauty writing this past decade, there is never just one treatment that fixes all. The most effective plan uses targeted approaches to treat specific issues, and most importantly, is carried out by a trained health professional. As such, Dr Jessie listens carefully to my concerns and recommends the most effective path forward for each.

Looking My Best in 2021 – Goals

As with many others around my age, I have the common signs of natural aging – skin laxity, fine lines and a dull complexion. The bits of my face are the same, they’re just no longer in all the same places. I’d most like to reduce fine lines around my forehead, crow’s feet and frown lines. Also, I’m looking to improve the appearance of my skin by plumping up some of the saggy bits. Lastly, I want to polish the texture of my skin, giving it a bit of a glow if possible.

Skin Treatments Malaysia

Improve Skin Tone and Texture

Working backwards, Dr Jessie recommends a Hydroglow Facial (RM 380) and ProYellow Laser (RM 800 – 1100) to improve my skin’s texture and tone. These are wonderful treatments to welcome in the new year as they don’t feel like medical procedures at all! Instead, it’s much more of a luxury spa experience.

A neck and shoulder massage begins the medical-grade facial and throughout, whenever there is any wait time, such as a mask, the massage is repeated. Skin is cleansed and exfoliated with a machine similar to that used in dermabrasion. Extraction of white and blackheads is included if you choose and an infusion of growth factors for hydration and a mask seals the facial.

Following the Hydroglow Facial, my skin is ready to accept the full benefits of the ProYellow Laser. Ideal for tackling vascular conditions, the laser treats pigmentation, flushing, and acne and assists in brightening and rejuvenating the skin.

The face gets two sweeps with the laser. The first is a general go over and the second targets specific areas such as any visible blood vessels. The sensation is warm; not uncomfortable at all. There’s a little more of a prickle when particular points are targeted, but it’s over in seconds.

I experience no downtime and could easily return to regular activities immediately after. Dr Jessie stresses the importance of hydration and sun protection to maintain the benefits of the laser.

Plump Sagging Skin

Juvederm, a dermal filler, is recommended to restore my facial contours and lift that sagging skin. On a hyaluronic acid base, it’s injected into key areas filling in lines and boosting the skin’s appearance. It’s ideal for cheeks, lips and around the mouth. Dr Jessie uses it to reduce the lines around my nasolabial folds and to add volume to my slightly drooping cheeks.

The procedure is quite fast; what I had done was less than 20 minutes. Numbing cream is applied beforehand, which reduces the sting experienced when the needle first breaks the skin. As Juvederm contains pain-reducing lidocaine, once the initial injection is made, the rest is relatively painless.

If you bruise easily, a cannula (blunt-ended tool) can be used instead of a needle. Use of a needle is more accurate and stimulates less pain, but it can burst blood vessels leading to bruising. As I bruise easily, Dr Jessie uses a canula to spread the filler. There is discomfort, but not pain and each injection is only a few seconds anyway. Avoiding alcohol, medication that thins the blood such as aspirin, and exercise can also lessen the likeliness of bruising.

Results are seen immediately. As I have only had two cubic centimetres (one on each side of the face), the outcome is subtle. Volume has been added, and lines have filled in. I think my skin looks fresh as if I’ve had a good rest rather than a dramatic change in appearance. Many patients opt for more cc, but I prefer ageing gracefully rather than attempting to turn back the clock, so this is just right for me.

Post-care is minimal and focused mostly on avoiding infection of injection points (highly unlikely) such as no make-up for a day. As mentioned earlier, avoiding alcohol and exercise should also reduce the chance of bruising. Additionally, facial massage, physical pressure or rubbing is not recommended for a month to ensure the filler stays in the areas intended.

Reduce Wrinkles & Fine Lines

Lastly, a well-known and used treatment for wrinkles is Botox. This is a drug specifically designed to treat wrinkles and creases. Its main ingredient, botulinum toxin, blocks signals from the nerves preventing muscle contractions. This softens wrinkles and assists in preventing further creases. The most common treatment areas are lines around the eyes (most prominent when smiling), frown lines and those in the forehead.

Here too numbing cream can be applied to take the sting off each injection. However, if you’d had filler, the prick of the fine needle used for Botox seems nothing and lasts for only seconds. Injection time is rapid and involves you smiling, frowning and raising your eyebrows to get precise application points.

The effects are not immediate like filler but are relatively fast with a visible difference found in four to seven days. The creases around my eyes, forehead and frown have pretty much disappeared. As with the filler, I like to play on the cautious side undertreating and looking natural, rather than over-injecting and looking plastic. Dr Jessie understands this and says that you can always top up if patients want more.

Post-care is similar to that of filler mainly to reduce the likeliness of bruising and infection of injection points. So, avoiding alcohol and strenuous exercise is suggested for at least a day (some recommend a week) surrounding the session, as well as no make-up. Also, it’s best not to rub the site for at least 24 hours and to stay upright (don’t go taking a nap immediately after) for four hours to prevent spreading the Botox to another area.
