Permanent Eyeliner Tattoo KL

Monica Tindall

While I can’t say I have particularly enjoyed working from home for the past nine months, there have been some benefits. Most of them are to do with not having to do things. Not wearing a mask. Not wearing underwear. Not wearing shoes. Not wasting time in transit. And, not wearing makeup.

The last one, in particular, I’m keen on prolonging for as long as possible. Besides time, I’m sure I’ve also saved a bundle that may have otherwise been spent on products. With the prospect of returning to the workplace and feeling the need to wear makeup again, I was happy to find out about permanent eyeliner or lash-enhancement tattoos. With one procedure I can do away with eyeliner for around five years!

What is a permanent eyeliner tattoo?

Permanent eyeliner is also known as eyeliner embroidery or a lash-enhancement tattoo. It is a treatment done to the top and/ or bottom lash lines. It’s similar to a tattoo in that a needle is used to deposit ink into the skin. Unlike a tattoo, however, the pigment only reaches the first layers. It can be done on the waterline, lash line and above the lash line. I prefer a subtle effect and am cautious when it comes to procedures that I will have to live with for five years – so it’s just the lash line that I’m after.

Qualified Technicians in KL

First and foremost, it’s absolutely recommended to consult with a qualified technician. Get references and look at before and after photos. Be sure to go in fully informed of what to expect. Getting something that will be visible for years and having needles and ink poked around the delicate eye area, deserves some investigation. Fortunately, the team at my go-to salon Eka Roots did much of the groundwork for me in hiring Florence (header photo), their permanent eyeliner tattoo expert. Florence has years of experience, many positive references and before and after photos to show her work.

Before beginning the procedure, I had a good discussion with Florence about what I wanted and what to expect. As mentioned, I play on the cautious side, preferring to begin light and then touch up if need be. As such, I opted for only the lash line to be filled and Florence mixed black and coffee ink together so that the tattoo is not a striking contrast to my pale skin.

Before Permanent Eyeliner Tattoo KL

Of course, your eyes should be completely clean before the permanent eyeliner procedure. Extensions should be removed a few days prior to ensure there is no remaining glue in the area, and it’s not recommended to tint your lashes in the two weeks leading up to the session. You should also go without buying contact lenses both before and after for a short while. And, it goes without saying that if you’ve had any eye surgery, that you should first seek your doctor’s clearance.

My online research suggests that antihistamines such as Benadryl may reduce swelling and also help you to relax. Anything that thins the blood such as aspirin, caffeine, alcohol and exercise are recommended to be avoided for a few days surrounding the treatment to prevent excess bleeding.

Procedure

The lash enhancement procedure takes place in a private room at Eka Roots. My lashes and lids were cleaned, and numbing cream applied. Of course, every client gets a new blade and hygiene is of the highest standard. Florence then gets to work inserting tiny droplets of coloured pigment between the lashes with a special tool. Some people experience bleeding, but I was surprised that I had no blood at all. The whole thing from start to finish was less than an hour.

Do permanent eyeliner tattoos hurt?

Although I’d been told that permanent eyeliner doesn’t hurt, I was a little sceptical. I had micro blading on my brows before and was expecting similar levels of pain. I hardly felt a thing, however! The numbing cream worked well. All I felt was the light pressure of Florence holding my lid still and some prodding, which might as well have been done with a cotton bud. I class my experience as pain-free.

Immediate Results

Immediately following the procedure, there was a faint redness around the lid. The eyeliner colour was darker (Florence says by about 50%) than what it will look like when it fully heals. I could easily go out without the worry of looking a mutant.

Afterwards, my eyes felt a little itchy, but I didn’t have as much swelling or redness as I expected. Florence suggested that my eyes would look as if I’d been crying for about half an hour straight after. She said the following day it would look like I’d been crying all night long. Ice packs can reduce the swelling and provide some comfort. But that was not the case for me. Perhaps because I only did a thin lash line, my recovery seemed pretty speedy.

Although vision is not affected, you might consider packing a pair of sunglasses. I found my eyes were a little sensitive to strong light. I also think that glasses can add a layer of protection from dust and pollutants in the air.

Florence recommends not touching the eyes for the first day but gently cleaning them morning and night from then on with filtered water. Dab, don’t rub, and certainly don’t pick! As the eyes heal, you could find tiny scabs. Try to let these fall off naturally. Mine are so minute that I don’t even notice them.

Sleeping with the head elevated can help reduce inflammation on the first night after treatment. Being conscious of your sleeping position too might prevent you from unconsciously rubbing your eyes. Avoid swimming, tanning beds, saunas and direct sun exposure until fully healed.

For the first three days following the permanent eyeliner procedure, my eyelids were sensitive to touch and felt a little itchy. It wasn’t unbearable though, and I found a soft cleansing with warm water alleviated any discomfort.

Florence suggests not wearing makeup for a few days and then only mascara on the lashes’ tips if you must and a little eye shadow away from the lash line. Internet research presented various recommendations to avoid any contamination for at least 10 days until the area is completely healed. Others said light makeup avoiding the lash line is okay after three days. I steered towards the cautious side and went ‘naked’ for two weeks. What are a few days when I have years of this permanent eyeliner tattoo ahead of me?

If you are even more cautious than me, have any preexisting conditions or are taking medication, this comprehensive guide of dos and don’ts might be helpful.

Lash Enhancement Tattoo – Before & After Two Weeks

4 – 6 Weeks

After four to six weeks, your permanent eyeliner should be completely healed, and the colour and shape will be steady for years to come. As we all heal differently, this is the stage where a touch up is done to even out any missing pigment or darken or widen the line if you so, please. A complimentary touch-up is included in every permanent eyeliner tattoo procedure. Check back in a few weeks, and I’ll post a photo of the final result after touch-up.

How much does it cost?

Permanent eyeliner tattoo KL with Florence at Eka Roots is priced at RM 650, including the initial procedure and a touch-up one month on.

Permanent Eyeliner Tattoo/ Lash Enhancement Review

As I’m a cautious person and try to enhance my natural features rather than change them, I am pleased with the lash enhancement done at Eka Roots. Many opt for a thicker, more dramatic line, but I am glad for the option to individualise the treatment and do what works for me. While I will still continue to wear mascara, I certainly think the permanent eyeliner tattoo will save me time in my daily routine and makes me feel a little more groomed even when not wearing makeup.

Reasons to try Permanent Eyeliner Tattoo KL at Eka Roots: a trusted technician; clean, hygienic environment; no need to draw on liner every day or a natural-looking enhancement of the lash line for a more subtle look.
