While I’m sad that we can’t travel at the moment, I try to find the positive in all circumstances. One such benefit of current restrictions is that Chef Paolo Cola, Executive Chef of Japamala Resort on Tioman Island, is now based full-time in KL. Following on from the kitchen at Tamarind Hill, he adapted over previous movement restrictions. He again offers a delicious Italian takeaway and delivery menu for MCO 3.0 under Il Tempio.

Il Tempio’s delivery menu for MCO 3.0 is a neat one-pager. Recipes highlight all that I love about Italian cuisine – a handful of high-quality ingredients all treated with care to showcase their natural character. While most chefs will say their food is best eaten hot from the kitchen, pizza, pasta, and burgers have a better travel life than many foods, making them good choices for delivery. Still, I find popping them in the oven for a few minutes before serving a good strategy to optimize their potential. 

Mains

Roasted Chicken Cacciatora (RM 28) is a tasty combination of various cuts seasoned with salt and pepper. Roasted together with cherry tomatoes and black olives, it’s a straightforward recipe but highly satisfying. 

I think the Tempio Burger (RM 28 – header photo) is excellent value for money given the quality of ingredients. A house-made minced beef patty is just that – meat – there are no fillers here plumping out the cost-price ratio. It’s fat and sandwiched together with roasted red onions (so good), tomato, salad leaves, and a generous amount of quality scamorza affumicata cheese (oh my!). We’ll have none of that ridiculous plastic sliced yellow cheese – only pure Italian craftsmanship here. A soft buttery bun holds it all together, and within a few seconds of plating it, the cheese seductively oozes out the sides.

Pizza

I’ve had every pizza on the menu at Il Tempio – it’s one of my favourite crusts in town. The only one remaining to try is the Vegetarian Pizza (RM 31, 12 inches), which is not a problem given that I love my veg. It has that signature tomato sauce that the chef does so well (you MUST try his Margherita), along with mozzarella and finely chopped mixed veg. More on Il Tempio’s wood-fired pizzas here.

MCO 3.0 Il Tempio Delivery Menu – Pasta

As with the pizza, all pasta is made from scratch at Il Tempio. Today we have wide tagliatelle ribbons and buxom gnocchi. The Tagliatelle Bolognese (RM 32) is made with minced beef and gives the strands just enough of a coat to fill it with flavour without overdoing it. My photos, unfortunately, do not do justice to the lusciousness of the Gnocchi 4 Cheese (RM 36). The tender parcels are livened by the cheese sauce with just the right amount of tanginess and creaminess in every bite. Whole walnuts add some crunch, nuttiness and a slightly tannic finish.

Wine

Something new on Il Tempio’s MCO 3.0 delivery menu is their wine list (very pleased with this addition). The group have an excellent selection of boutique wines with many natural, organic and biodynamic choices included. To take us across the meal, I pick a rose from Adelaide Hills, Australia. Ochota Barrels Surfer Rosa Garnacha 2016 (RM 204, but currently there’s a deal giving a 15% discount) offers versatility for our pasta, pizza and burger. Notably, it’s pretty pale pink and comes from an organic vineyard dating back to 1946. The grapes are picked young, gifting the wine freshness and vibrant acidity. We find strawberries and some herbal undertones adding a layer of complexity.
