What happens when two leaders in their respective industries of aesthetic medicine and wellness join forces? Customers get convenience and comfort, medical-grade results and spa pampering all in one location. The M∙A∙C∙ Clinic’s proximity to Energy Spa & Wellness in Great Eastern Mall is unprecedented, raising the bar for both fields.  While the two are separate entities, their next-door addresses allow for easy communication and for clients to conveniently pop from one to other.

The M∙A∙C∙ Clinic is one of the most well-reputed aesthetic clinics in the country. Its founder, Dr Hew Yin Keat, is a graduate of The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and is a pioneer of aesthetic medicine in Malaysia. Besides holding a Diploma in Practical Dermatology from the University of Wales, being one of the most experienced Botox trainers in Malaysia and being a founding member of the Malaysian Society of Aesthetic Medicine, he now adds this partnership to his collection. The M∙A∙C∙ Clinic has been in operation for 24 years! I’ve been visiting Dr Hew since 2014 and have had and heard nothing but positive experiences.

Likewise, the team behind Energy Spa & Wellness have been lifting industry standards in Malaysia for almost two decades. A centre for therapist training, the quality of treatments available here is second to none. The urban spa setting encompasses two floors with singles and couple treatment rooms, facilities such as a steam room, sauna and locker room, as well as dedicated areas for yoga, pilates and specialist consultations. Over the years, Energy Spa & Wellness has constantly offered professional services, always going the extra mile to provide a holistic experience using third-party consultants such as reiki masters and physiotherapists. It seems that the alliance with The M∙A∙C∙ Clinic is a natural progression.

I take advantage of the wonderfully convenient new location (residents around KLCC and Ampang will be pleased) to rediscover these two old friends. My visit begins with cutting-edge aesthetic treatments in The M∙A∙C∙ Clinic Great Eastern Mall, followed by heavenly relaxation sessions at Energy Spa & Wellness.

The M∙A∙C∙ Clinic team aim to improve skin and enhance clients’ appearance with the most advanced and proven technologies, procedures and products. And, wow, do they have a comprehensive range. From lasers to injectables, recommendations for wrinkles, acne, body treatments and just about everything in between, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more thorough offering elsewhere. They take great care in minimising discomfort and downtime, and I always feel that the strictest safety protocols are followed. Furthermore, the professional experience is embraced by a relaxing and caring environment.

Consultation

Currently, Dr Victor and Dr Hew are on-site. Once the clinic stabilises, Dr Victor will be the primary point of contact, but for now, both sets of hands are on deck. During the consultation, my skin and its suitability for treatment are assessed. Proposed procedures, expected recovery time, costs and realistic outcomes are discussed. While tried and trusted treatments prevail, I’m always excited to learn about the latest scientific developments – especially when they promise to be less painful, have limited downtime and visible results.

Potenza by Cynosure – RF Microneedling

Potenza by Cynosure ticks all of the above boxes. It’s the most recent addition to The M∙A∙C∙ Clinic’s collection and revolutionises Radio Frequency (RF) microneedling. I’ve had positive results with a similar procedure before but found it uncomfortable, and the downtime lasted a few days, making it not so convenient for my busy lifestyle. The Potenza treatment is less painful, and more effective because of the immediate feedback system built into the machine, and promises reduced downtime.

As the name suggests, RF microneedling uses tiny needles to puncture the skin and releases radio frequency waves into the channels created. The process stimulates the new growth of capillaries, elastin and collagen. When the skin repairs itself, it can lead to scar, stretch marks and pore reduction, increase tightness and lessen wrinkles and fine lines.

Cynosure’s Potenza technology reduces the pain and downtime associated with the original technology by slowing down the insertion of the tiny needles. It’s a versatile system allowing doctors to customise treatments dependent on skin type and area of the body being treated. The depth of puncture can be changed, allowing a shallower penetration for bony areas such as the forehead and more profound treatment for fleshier parts such as the cheeks.

Reduction of pain and downtime is certainly applaudable, but I find the most exciting is the immediate feedback the system supplies to physicians. A skin impedance reading (how well the current is conducting through skin tissues) is reported during every shot, allowing the doctor to make immediate adjustments, hence maximising results.

The procedure at The M∙A∙C∙ Clinic in Great Eastern Mall begins with a cleansing of the skin and applying a topical anesthetic, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes to work. The excess cream is then removed, and the procedure begins. Dr Victor uses a handpiece to pass over 300 applications to my face! Considering each pass comprises 25 microinjections, that’s a lot of ground covered. It’s relatively comfortable – far less painful than the extraction portion of a facial. With some chatting and explanation in between, the entire procedure is complete in less than 20 minutes.

Potenza – RF Microneedling

Potenza by Cynosure RF Microneedling Results

My face is a light blush immediately following the session. It’s not severe enough to stop me from enjoying a glass of wine in Alexis Bistro downstairs afterwards while waiting for a Grab, though. The following day, I’m an even lighter shade of pink, and within 24 hours, my skin has completely returned to its natural hue. At first, my skin is ever-so-slightly coarse. However, on the third day, I feel that makeup is going on more smoothly, and I might even have a glow.

The published research recommends three to four treatments roughly a month apart for maximum results. I’ll return in a couple of weeks for part two. It’s said that the most significant results are seen about three to six months following treatment. Check back here in a few months, and I’ll provide you with an update.

Intraceuticals Oxygen Treatment

Following the Potenza RF microneedling session, Maida, a therapist from Energy Spa next door, whisks me off to follow up the session with an Intraceuticals Oxygen Treatment. I’m positive this assists with a speedy recovery and a faster reduction of redness. In fact, Maida herself is impressed. The Potenza machine is new to the clinic so I am her first patient to follow up with an Intraceuticals Oxygen Treatment. She takes before and after photos and is so happy with the immediate impact that she rushes off to share with Dr Hew and Dr Victor the session’s success.

After the warmth of the prior experience, the Intraceuticals Oxygen Treatment feels wonderfully cooling. High-pressure oxygen is used to infuse special formulations (targeted to specific needs such as lifting, plumping, and hydrating) into the skin. Working in harmony, the microneedling has opened up channels fostering greater penetration, and the oxygen and serums provide relief to the agitated skin speeding up the healing process.

The procedure lasts about 35 minutes, is extremely relaxing and suitable for most skin types. It instantly hydrates and refreshes. I can see why so many celebrities swear by it before stepping out on the red carpet. This would be perfect to sign up for before a special night out or occasion (and also following more disruptive therapies such as laser and microneedling).

Energy Spa Great Eastern Mall

Complementing services at The M∙A∙C∙ Clinic Great Eastern Mall, Energy Spa & Wellness immediately next door provides excellence in massage, facials, body treatments and more. As with the clinic, I’ve been visiting the spa since it first opened, not quite two decades ago. As such, I have some favourite treatments and return for two of them today – a 90-minute Hot Stone Massage and Paraffin Wax Pedicure.

Hot Stone Relaxation Combo Massage

Viji is a master of her craft and has been refining her skills for over 19 years. Her expertise in reading the body is second to none. One look at my posture, and she voices my tight and tired spots with precision. She is confident in her practice, making good use of the heated stones in the Hot Stone Relaxation Combo Massage (RM 255, 90 minutes) to first warm and relax my muscles and then later as tools to dig deep into their structure. The 90 minutes is perfectly timed. It’s not long enough to make me restless and not too short for me to wish for more. As the description reads, it literally seems to “melt away tension.” The heated massage bed is an additional bonus.

Intensive Paraffin Feet Treatment

I’ve also long been a fan of Energy Spa & Wellness’ Paraffin Feet Treatment (RM 150, 75 minutes). This 75-minute session is the ultimate in pedicures. In addition to the scrub, exfoliation, cuticle trimming, filing, buffing and so forth you’d expect from a luxury pedicure, warm paraffin wax is applied to the feet and half leg. It’s a wonderfully comforting feeling. The melted wax is brushed on the skin, and then the legs and feet are wrapped and left to soak up the benefits. When the waxed is peeled off, the skin feels nourished, hydrated, soft and subtle. It’s an excellent choice for those who might neglect their feet, exercise a lot or spend a long time standing.
