For a quick and filling lunch, Flock at W Kuala Lumpur has launched “Just Lunch,” a midday buffet catering to lunch-goers who need something easy, tasty and fast. The convenient, delicious and nutritious dining experience is tailored to those constantly on the go.
When we walked into Flock at the W Kuala Lumpur, we were immersed in a funky atmosphere with cool beats permeating the air and front-row seats to the Twin Towers. The harmonious blend of soothing heather hues and vibrant lime complement the lofty space, which incorporates modern pendant lights to create a contemporary flair. A quick walk around to assess the buffet options delights the senses, from the ‘Just Burnt’ bread station to the open kitchen, where made-to-order dishes are craftily prepared.
Just Lunch at W Kuala Lumpur
The Just Lunch buffet is priced at RM 108 per person, with the option to top up with supplementary dishes (RM 48) for those wanting a meal plated by chefs. As a flexitarian, I relished the abundance of vegetarian food on offer and was safe in the knowledge that each veggie dish fit with my desire for a more balanced and sustainable lifestyle. Despite my appreciation for the vegetarian options, I indulged in a selection of fish and meat dishes, of which there were plenty to choose from, both from the buffet menu and optional, supplementary, made-to-order dishes.
Hydroponic Leaves
In the world of flavours, salad counters hold a special place in my heart. My affinity for all things vinegar transforms me into a vinegar-ophile, and salads are the vessel for getting all that tanginess to my taste buds. W Kuala Lumpur sources their greens from BoomGrow, which means you can’t get any fresher, as you literally snip the leaves from the live plant growing on the counter. You can let your creativity run wild, turning the humble act of salad-making into a culinary masterpiece with the multitude of dressings, leaves and accoutrements giving infinite combinations.
Hearty Soup
Mon and I tucked into a bowl of comforting wild rice and mushroom soup, with the velvety texture and flavours wrapping us in its warm embrace. The umami of the mushroom and the earthiness of the wild rice melded together perfectly. That alone would have happily satisfied our tummies had we not been compelled to try a little of everything the lunch had to offer!
Mediterranean
We loved the delightful array of antipasti, where the usual suspects of grilled artichokes, peppers, olives, confit of tomatoes and several types of home-cured salmon came together to create a delightful prelude to the lunch. The skewers were perfectly chargrilled, and simple, quality ingredients perfectly embodied the spirit of Mediterranean cuisine.
Made to Order Dishes
Of the four Just Made to Order (RM 48) options, Mon and I selected the Barramundi with asam butter and fresh herbs, and the Grilled Marinated Duck Breast with yellow curry.
Due to the assertive nature of belacan, I find that it can often dominate a dish, yet on this occasion, the skilful use of the condiment exuded a delicate, balanced pungency to the asam butter. The fish was cooked perfectly translucent and came together to form a rich yet light plate.
The duck was adeptly cooked to a perfect pinkness, which contrasted beautifully against the yellow curry hailing from my beloved Thailand. The art of getting a Thai dish exactly right is to balance the four S’s – sweet, sour, salt and spice. In my humble opinion, the chef at Flock executed this well.
Japanese Sushi
While I continue reducing my flesh consumption, sushi and sashimi remain my weakness. The fare on offer did not disappoint, from fresh, glistening salmon and tuna sashimi to nigiri topped with the sea’s abundance to maki rolls with their playful combinations and artistic presentation. The nose-burning wasabi, salty soy sauce and pickled ginger combined to create a cornucopia of flavourful deliciousness, which brought the fish to life.
Fresh Mixed Juices
If, like me, you need the occasional vitamin injection, there is a selection of freshly pressed juices (RM 20) or fresh lemonade (RM 12) made in the dedicated, vibrant neon juice bar. The Carrot, Orange & Ginger was fresh, bright, and invigorating, whilst the Celery & Apple, high in antioxidants, was earthy and hydrating.

Of course, there are plentiful desserts on the Just Lunch at W Kuala Lumpur buffet. From individually portioned cheesecakes to an ice kacang station and fresh fruit, there are many options for a sweet finish.
