Mama Shelter – Rooftop Restaurant & Bar Lisbon
Monica Tindall
Mama Shelter’s rooftop restaurant and bar is one of the hippest spots to catch stunning views of the city and the Tagus River in the heart of Lisbon. The sky terrace boasts a relaxed yet upbeat atmosphere, making it an ideal spot to enjoy a meal with friends or family or unwind while enjoying the picturesque scenery.
The restaurant’s design takes inspiration from Lisbon’s spirited street life. Its interior features a colourful and eclectic ambience, combining vintage furniture, funky artwork, and exposed brickwork. The rooftop terrace is loaded with charm, assisted by vibrant umbrellas, daybeds covered with stripey shade cloth, lounge and garden-table seating and lots of greenery.
The “beach club on a rooftop” vibe has proven successful with locals and visitors alike. Live DJ sets draw the crowds from Thursday to Saturday, but even our Sunday evening appointment (despite the ’80s remix soundtrack) saw a full house.
Mama Shelter Lisbon
In the summer, the best way to enjoy an evening out at Mama Shelter’s rooftop restaurant is with friends and to arrive as the sun lowers. Around 7 p.m., a light breeze picks up, taking the harsh edge off the day’s heat yet still offering several hours of daylight for taking in the views.
Drinks Menu
The restaurant serves creative cocktails and local wines to complement those awesome views and music sessions. A little libation and upbeat tunes add to the lively atmosphere.
Each bartender has crafted a unique cocktail paying homage to one of Portugal’s picturesque beaches. Among the selection, my favourite is the Caparica (EUR 14), a stimulating blend of Pisco 1615, passionfruit, pineapple, and lemon. Hubby thoroughly enjoyed the fruity and sweet Nazaré (EUR 13), featuring Vodka Absolut Citron, Blue Curacao, lemon, agave, Schweppes lemon, and quinine. For those seeking a rum-based option, the Troia (EUR 13) combines Rum Plantation 5, Cointreau, kiwi, mint, lime, and agave, resulting in a refreshing porch sipper. Meanwhile, the Tamariz (EUR 14) offers an explosion of orange and bittersweet balance thanks to its Aperol base, complemented by peach schnapps, orange, lime, and egg white.
Alternatively, both rose and vinho verde wine scream rooftop summers, and you can’t go wrong with either Lisbon’s Adega Mae Rose (EUR 7), made from pinot noir grapes or Alvarinho’s Soalheira Minho (EUR 9).
Food Menu & Prices
Sharing plates is the name of the game here, and if we have the chance to return, we would come with friends and order repeat platters. The Trio Olives, Stracciatella (not to be confused with the ice cream, but rather the cheese), and Hummus (EUR 20) could easily serve four or more people. It comes with a basket of bread and grissinis. Additionally, we would order the cheese board and probably the Iberian ham board.
For something heartier, the Grilled Octopus (EUR 44) is a fat specimen, nicely charred, and served with celery and apple puree, baby lettuce, green sauce, and a side bowl of wedges with pink mayo. The Vegetable Dumplings (EUR 24) provide a hearty vegetarian option. The green parcels are a cross between a gyoza, a momo, and a samosa, packed with veggies and served with a curry dahl-like dip.

I wonder if the octopus was chewy…like cuttlefish or squids, the big ones.
