KL’s kid-friendliest café just got even friendlier! Red Beanbag, known for its child—and pet-inclusive environment and menu, has just launched high tea sets designed to delight the little ones.

In the classic children’s book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, the protagonist eats through an array of savoury and sweet foods before disappearing into a cocoon and reemerging as a beautiful butterfly. You may be tempted to emulate the caterpillar as you move from dish to dish at Red Beanbag. Still, we suggest you slow down and take time to enjoy the sun-drenched interior of the restaurant and the variety of habitats to explore within. There is the toy-stocked children’s play area, a cosy nursing room, greenery-lined (and dog-friendly) outdoor seating, and from the main dining area, a clear view into the roastery itself, where green coffee beans are tumbled and toasted to perfection.

Family & Pet-friendly Café KL

Indeed, Red Beanbag feels like a place where multiple generations can come together and find an experience and menu that offers something for all. For the kids, there are already a bunch of themed dishes featuring beloved book characters, such as The Hungry Caterpillar (RM18) himself, built from overlapping pancakes, chocolate sauce, fresh blueberries and strawberries. And now, you can make your pride and joy feel even more special with the introduction of kid-friendly high tea sets.

Kid-friendly High Tea Sets KL

Kid-friendly high tea themes rotate monthly, with March serving The Gruffalo Set (RM 68). The three-tiered stand tells the story of The Gruffalo (Julia Donaldson’s children’s classic) through an assemblage of its characters, all built from confections of many varieties. The Gruffalo is a beast of Black Forest cake with rich chocolate frosting resting on the chocolate crumble forest floor. There are passion fruit macaroon owls with fruit leather wings and passion fruit insides, and choux pastry mango and coconut puff red foxes that hunt the perimeter of the bottom tier of the tea stand. The tray is topped with the snake – fresh fruit jelly cups – and edible flowers. Our small party of adults enjoyed looking at the whole artful creation so much we had to remind ourselves to eat it, which we then did with enthusiasm.

Drinks

Like a good children’s movie, Red Beanbag is not only enjoyed by children but has plenty to make adults smile, too.

Their house-made refreshments are perfect warm-weather thirst-quenchers. The Kantan Fizz (RM16) had spears of cucumber and ginger flowers leaning over the rim. Once the torch ginger syrup at the base was stirred in, each sip delivered ginger intensity that Monica described as “healing.” Then there was the Green Means Go! (RM16) blend of spinach, cucumber, and apples that provided us with a healthful dose of chlorophyll. An espresso Macchiato (RM11) had a dollop of milky froth on top, hiding rich artisanal coffee beneath. Alternatively, one could opt for the Cold Brew Coffee (RM12) served in a hip flask alongside a tumbler of ice with a dehydrated slice of citrus. If something warming is what you are looking for, try the Dragonfruit, Pineapple, Peach and Apple Fruit Tea (RM15) served in a ceramic pot filled with fresh sliced fruit. It’s a brilliant maroon hue and naturally sweet, thanks to the fruit.

All Day Brunch & Mains Menu

Red Beanbag’s menu offers something to delight everyone, regardless of age. Being all-day breakfast enthusiasts, we began crafting our menu with those dishes. To savour the Signature Baked Eggs (RM32), you’ll first want to pierce the golden, cheesy crust, revealing a warm blend of eggs, potatoes, eggplant, and chicken chorizo. The sourdough slices are perfect for scooping up every last bit from the ceramic dish.

Redefining avocado toast, the Avo Mushroom (RM32) elevated an already satisfying combination by adding two species of mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, and fresh sprigs of pea greens. The sourdough base was an excellent foundation, providing a crunchy contrast to the creamy avocado and savoury toppings.

We shared the Brisket Steak Sandwich (RM43) alongside a basket of crispy, double-fried fries. Monica appreciated the pleasant surprise of chopped jalapeños and red cabbage on the sandwich, which balanced the tender braised Aussie beef. I enjoyed this one so much that I took another home.

If meat is not your thing, you can always reach for the Lentil Walnut Bolognese (RM28), which was topped with shaved parmesan and fresh basil leaves. Or perhaps, the Chimichurri Quinoa Bowl (RM25) with quinoa grain hiding under an overstory of roasted red beets, cauliflower, sweet potato, carrot, and corn salsa, which added a touch of sweetness to the combination.

There are myriad dessert options on the menu, but kid-friendly high tea, The Gruffalo, had us (mostly) topped out for sweets. So, the Super Skyscraper (RM26) pancake stack made for a perfectly respectable dessert to share. The stack of cakes reached high, and the toppings of granola and fresh berries and side of brûléed bananas made them almost feel healthy.
