When another weekend draws to a close, do you eagerly anticipate the week ahead, or do you use brunch as a coping mechanism to rally your spirits? (Asking for a friend.) We contemplate this question in the cool shade of a familiar tree-lined shoplot in Bukit Damansara. Luckily for us, The Meat Experts (TME) may have an answer. Rather than let the Sunday scaries get us down, we meet again at The Meat Experts to sample their newly launched brunch menu available exclusively on weekends.

We dive right into the depths of the Red, Hot & Runny (RM 36), The Meat Experts’ take on shakshuka with onion, roasted chickpeas, spinach, peppers, and plenty of bacon and sausage. This creamy savoury concoction is served with homemade crunchy sourdough and a mouthwatering combination of melted buffalo cheese and mozzarella. We are immediately struck by the chickpeas’ unusual texture and marvel at how they’ve retained their crunch. The roasted peppers are expertly folded in, their soft texture contrasting cleanly with the crispy sourdough.

Our plates freshly cleaned, we turn our attention to the Eggs, Brats & Jam (RM 59 for 1-2 people). It’s an appetising spread of fresh sourdough, potato tots, baked portobello, tomatoes, mixed greens, bacon stripes, Niman Ranch bratwurst, and your choice of eggs. Niman Ranch’s bratwurst is clean-tasting and antibiotic and hormone-free, demonstrating their steadfast commitment to environmental, economic, and social sustainability. We cut into the potato tots and are pleasantly surprised to discover their tender meat filling, adding depth to every bite. The mixed greens are appetisingly fresh, and the roasted portobello provides a hint of nutty umami under a thick layer of cheese. The smoked bacon jam is hearty, smoky, and slightly sweet – perfectly balanced, and so easily spread on everything. Though this platter can satisfy two people, it disappears quickly under our watch.

We then reach for the Pig Out Benny (RM 33), a combination of maple-glazed thick-cut bacon, 63-degree Celsius eggs, and avocado on sourdough. As if that weren’t enough, alfalfa sprouts, pickled red onion, and a hearty helping of homemade hollandaise sauce expertly raise this dish to elevated brunch fare. We revel in the bacon’s chewiness and salty, slightly smoky flavour while enjoying the combined creaminess of the hollandaise sauce and poached eggs. The red onions add a hint of sourness that expertly cut through the other bold flavours on the plate.

The Spice, Slice, & Everything Nice (RM 36) has a promising name and delivers on all counts. The Belgian waffles are served warm and skate the line between sweet and savoury with ease. The fried chicken is delightfully crispy, and the hot sauce drizzled on top adds a nice zing of heat. The generous helping of sliced avocado adds a welcome touch of creaminess.

Finally, the French Kiss (RM 34) arrives and really should be re-named chef’s kiss. A thick slice of brioche is adorned with caramelised bananas, fresh berries, candied bacon strips, and toasted almond flakes. It’s doused with a generous pour of warm vanilla sauce upon serving. Maple butter ice cream can be added for RM 15, but this dish is perfect as it is. The brioche is warm and buttery, while the berries are soft and fold well into the bread. The banana is coated in crumbles and almond flakes for added crunch, making this the ultimate comfort brunch dish.

We toast to our delicious brunch with a glass of La Gioiosa “Floreal” Prosecco Doc Rosé (RM 175). We sourced it from The Meat Experts’ own mart just a few doors down. It’s a well-stocked paradise of cold cuts, cheese, and spirits. Guests can grab a bottle of bubbly at retail prices to accompany their brunch – excellent value and a rarity in KL. The prosecco is refreshing and light on the palate, a delightful coda to our meal.
