Interview with Lee Hai Lin (Lin) -Co-founder of Smooshie Juice

What do you do and how did you get into the industry?
I am the creative, artsy (and taller) half of Smooshie Juice. Smooshie was founded five years ago. Pure bottled juices were hard to come by then and the market was mostly swamped with unhealthy sugar laden drinks. That’s when me and my childhood friend Wan Chiun, decided to venture in to the unknown world of producing juices.

Share with us an interesting story.
Our first Smooshie team consisted of some native ‘makciks’ from the orang asli village down the road from the office!

What’s the best/ worst part of your job?
Best Part: Spreading little bottles of health, joy and yumminess to Malaysians!
Worst Part: Having to deal with serious stuff like staffing, hitting numbers and all sorts of business related problems!

What’s your favourite Smooshie flavour?
It depends on my mood but the Red Apple & Dragonfruit is my all time favourite!

What’s one of your most extreme moments behind the scenes?
Me and Wan Chiun were testing out juicing machines and got exposed to a faulty ultraviolet insect-machine. We lost our eyesight for one night and coincidentally ended up in the same 24-hour clinic (in the middle of the night). Thankfully our perfect vision was restored after a few weeks of rehabilitation!

The perfect day off would be…
Somewhere far away from the hectic-ness of city life. I’m from Penang and spent many years in Australia, so I’m still not used to the KL lifestyle!

What do you do for fun?
Play music and watch movies!

What’s something you’d like people to know about Smooshie Juice?
Being a purely Malaysian brand, we believe in showcasing as much local produce as possible. We have a myriad of delicious and nutritious fruits right in our own backyard. For example, our passionfruit come from a farm in Negeri Sembilan, and our delicious dragonfruits are sourced from an organic farm in Tampin, Melaka. We even have a mini potted garden where we grow our own mint using compost made from our own fruit waste!

What’s your view on the health scene in KL?
It is growing! Which is awesome. Our aim for Smooshie was to spread the awareness on the importance of healthy living and good ingredients and we’re happy that the trend is picking up, but there is a lot more room for improvement. Malaysia is still one of most obese countries in Asia, with one of the highest diabetic rates – the dream would be to help reduce that figure.
