Dr Park Ji Youn

In this interview, Dr Park Ji Youn, a dermatologist at Ozhean A.M. Clinic, shares some wisdom about aesthetic treatments and what makes Korean beauty so distinct.

What do you do and how did you get into the industry?

I am a Korean board-certified dermatologist, recently residing in KL. As the founder and director of the Ozhean A.M clinic. I practise as a doctor in Korea, while I manage the clinic here in Kuala Lumpur as the managing director.

When I was studying medicine in medical school, skin appeared to be very interesting to me. Skin is the largest organ in our body and face. It’s the superficial layer that works as a barrier to protect and cover us from everything. It triggered my interest as we could diagnose and examine just with our bare eyes. Nowadays, to diagnose other parts of the human body, it requires a lab test or scans to obtain the diagnosis. Skin is the only organ that’s justifiable by our bare eyes.

Why aesthetic medicine?

Aesthetic medicine is of high concern for many nowadays. Having a high demand on the market, I found it rather exciting and grew my passion for it. In terms of ageing, every single person’s concerns can vary. My love involves customizing different treatments to cure and help my patients based on their concerns, it’s very individualistic.

Share with us an interesting story from behind the scenes.

Nowadays, some of my customers say, “why does everyone’s face look the same when they go through some procedures, such as fillers in a Korean clinic?”

Procedures should be different and individualized for everyone. Many clinics, however, are doing procedures routinely without customization. In Korea, we called it “Gangnam Women’s Faces”. The reason why I started Ozhean Clinic is to break the norm of being an aesthetic clinic in Korea that produces “Gangnam Women’s’ faces.” I like to give individual treatments to enhance each person’s beauty. This is also my mission as a dermatologist.

What’s the best/ worst part of your job?

The best part is when I can see the good results, for example, diminishing pigmentations, pores, scars, and so on, especially when the patients haven’t gotten the same result at previous clinics.

The worst part is that even though we can show the results through treatments, everyone needs maintenance treatment because ageing and photoaging can’t be avoided.

What’s one of the craziest things you’ve seen behind the scenes?

When I consult in Korea as a dermatologist, we’ve got more than 200 patients to visit with two dermatologists in the clinic within a day. It was the craziest memory. You won’t be able to imagine how overwhelming it is. I didn’t even have time for a restroom break!

What’s the most popular treatment in Ozhean A.M. Clinic?

The most popular treatment is the “FIT customizing program”. FIT is a customized premium skin program to FIT everyone’s skin. We are customizing premium lasers, anti-ageing treatment and facial programs to achieve the best results for each individual. For example, FIT Pico triple treatment, FIT pore treatment, FIT acne scar treatment, and so on. We also use our customized cocktails for the skin to create a better result.

We are one of the leading aesthetic clinics in Malaysia and the first clinic that’s directly adapted by Korea. Other than that, we also have a slimming and hair loss program that’s clinically proven.

What treatment do you think gets the best results for money?

It depends on an individual’s concern. Even though cost-effectiveness is good; it will be useless if the parts being treated is not the customer’s concern. Hence, I always ask my patients about their primary concern. To correct your major concern gets the best results for the money. It’s part of our clinic’s philosophy.

The perfect day off would be…

Simply not doing anything but laying down in bed. Hehe.

What do you do for fun?

I like travelling. However, within the past six years, I couldn’t go anyplace to explore. I have only managed a few short resort getaways due to having two young kids. I guess I can only start travelling when they grow up, a little bit sad, isn’t it?

What’s something you’d like people to know about Ozhean?

I want people to know Ozhean, not only for the reason that we’re from Korea but also because we are trustworthy and able to solve your concerns and problems with evidence-based treatment. Also, I want people to remember Ozhean is continually studying and striving for better results.

When you’re not working, what is your favourite food and beverage pairing?

I love coffee and desserts, such as waffles and toast, with a lot of cream.

What’s your view on the beauty scene in Kuala Lumpur?

I’m impressed that KL’s beauty industry is more developed than what I originally had in mind. Every doctor that I met in KL is passionate about their career. I’m sure that KL will soon be one of the leading countries in South East Asia in terms of aesthetic medicines.

Where do you see the industry headed?

I think Korean aesthetic medicine is staying a little bit ahead of the times compared to other countries. Nowadays, in Korea, we don’t treat the disease or ageing, but work three steps ahead and prefer to prevent it before it gets worse. In other words, preventive medicine is also effective in aesthetics. Slowly but surely, I believe in Malaysia, it would be slowly headed to a similar path.

What’s in store for you in the upcoming months?

I have to concentrate on spreading the opening of Ozhean A.M clinics and be ready to welcome the KL people. Our team attempts many ways in spreading and educating the aesthetics through private events, social media, even small education talks. In the future, we’re also planning to collaborate with corporations in giving educational, medical discussions in a beautiful area. Last but not least, we welcome anyone who loves to know more about the Korean way of aesthetics to pay us a visit, we provide free consultancy to all our customers.
