Nabil Rahiman, Food & Beverage Director, Traders KL

Nabil Rahiman

In this interview, Nabil Rahiman, food and beverage director at Traders KL, shares his love for food and passion for working with people.

What do you do and how did you get into the industry?
I am the Director of Food & Beverage at Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur.  I got into the industry by working part-time in a bar.  I actually wanted to be a footballer; that is a far cry from being in a bar.  That was not meant to be, however, due to injuries.  I am a strong believer that everything happens for a reason and now I am very happy in F&B and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

Share with us an interesting story from behind the scenes.
Every day is an interesting day. I enjoy my work in F&B and maybe one day I will write a book of interesting secrets behind the scenes.

What’s the best/ worst part of your job?
The best part of the job is when I get to observe people. Working a bar has its benefits and I get to see a lot – people on their first date, people breaking up, receiving advice, making friends and all the other naughty bits.

What’s your favourite meal at Traders KL?
The curry laksa that is being served at our all-day dining outlet On The Go. I am just salivating, talking about it. It is full of oomph with a rich sauce and totally awesome!

The perfect day off would be…
One where I have the luxury of enjoying a nice roti canai and teh tarik outdoors and just watching the goings-on around me.  Working in a fast-paced environment makes me crave for simple things. It’s really down to sunshine and fresh air.

A day in the life of a food and beverage manager is…
Pretty much fueled with adrenaline of which I need my daily dosage each day. It is ironic how I need it daily for a good start.

What do you do for fun?
Visiting new F&B outlets and enjoying good food, going for long walks.

What’s something you’d like guests to know about Traders KL?
How awesome this hotel is and have I told you about SkyBar too?

What’s one of your most memorable food and beverage pairings?
It’s all about pasta and San Pellegrino sodas.

What’s your view on the food scene in KL?
KL has the most intense diversity in food, whether you are fine dining or eating by the sidewalks.  I am not Malaysian and is being slowly introduced to a lot of different food types here and it has not ceased to amaze me.  I keep looking forward to weekend food outings.  Not good for the diet plan though, but who cares, food comes first.

What’s in store for you in the upcoming months?
I have only been at Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur for 5 months only.  Enhancing the food and beverage scene at the hotel is my top priority and ensuring that service is top-notch!
